I know cold calling is usually the better way to go, however I thought I'd give emailing a try. My biggest question is what to open with, and what to put as my subject line.

I did emailing a while ago, and sending out 50 emails, I received 6 responses. Great right?, but only 2 of them converted. Still pretty good imo. My biggest mistake was going all over the place with different niches. Now I'm targeting one niche. I believe my subject line helped out. All I put was "Hello <name>". Since I sent them all out through my hostgator email, I was not able to track open rates and bounce rates, etc.

Now that I'm not using business cards, i don't have direct names. So I cannot be sure what the business owners names are. So what do I put as the subject line (selling sms services btw) I know this is the offline forum, but I feel this better suits this area.

So what do I put in the subject line?
and
How do I open the email "Hello fellow business owner"?

Lets say you're targeting the "Plumber" niche.

    Subject line= Plumber Wanted

Opening Line = Hi Local Plumber, I am looking for a plumber in (city) .....

That's pretty good. Seems somewhat like a bait and switch, because they think you want a plumber. They hope its for their services, not for ours. Have you gotten positive feedback from this?

IMHO, there are really 3 parts to prospecting by email:

      1. Deliverability
      2. Open Rate
      3. Compelling copy that makes them take a call to action NOW!

For #1, I've found that I tend to get a better overall deliverability rate if I send just a plain text email. If I want them to see a video or go to a website, I just spell out the full URL I want them to go to. Ever noticed all those emails from the "gurus" (via Aweber) come to you via plain-text email

For #2, I can't claim to have got clients by this myself - HOWEVER, here's one subject line I use that consistently has a higher open rate than any others I have tried (somewhat similiar to what zoro mentioned)....
      Hi {first name} - quick question...
      Yes, it's stupidly simple but:

      1. It implies you know them.
      2. You have a question for them....so, it's not misleading.

As for #3.....still working on that!
