Local Video since Penguin?

I haven't seen much here since Penguin about local video. I know backlinking has gotten weaker, so as far as backlinking for video...is that still fair game? If not, what else can be done to assure it's victory to page 1 in google?

It could be just me - but I tend to see more YouTube videos popping up in the search results lately.. Not backed up with actual data - but that's the feeling I have.

I'd second that. Once again just personal experience.

I have also noticed youtube videos ranking quite highly in local search, particularly in the last couple of weeks.

Ranking videos is still just as easy, basically because youtube and th other video sites can handle as many backlinks as you can throw at them, it's basically a case of brute force, send a million backlinks to your video (properly optimised) and you'll get it ranked.

Get on board now, I'm pretty sure once Google see people doing this they;ll find a way to put an end to it being this simple.

I believe this trend will continue. With Google once paying for 50,000 businesses to get photographed, Facebook's recent push on video and new paid channels, Google+ Local and Google's new social layer (which FB has had since 2009), video appears to be a clear signal offering value to local businesses.

Think of this. A local business can benefit from at least four clear video types.

    Testimonial
    Office Walk Through
    Service Offering (technical)
    Commercial Offer (10sec+)

So, in theory if images were so important to Google, the trends are lining up that video will be equally important, or greater.

It makes sense we'll see this trend continue.

In order to rank videos, firing links will work...however following quality IM practices indicate if you got this video shared (social layer) by your circle, you'll increase trust. However if you get your content shared by an authoritative theme source (attorney association for example for attorney) or local source (local chamber of commerce), then you'll likely get the link juice you need for long term rankings.

Make quality video that truly benefit the local business user, follow best practices, promote the content and you'll do very well with video in local for the long term.

When you say social layer, you're just referring to being shared on social networks right? Otherwise, I've never heard it referred to as "social Layer". Also when you say quality video that will truly benefit, does that mean that an animoto slideshow (without the watermarks) is not good enough? I have to admit I've always found it quite cheesy, but many have seen great and many have seen bad things from it. But are you saying that's a bad way to do the videos?

The youtube ranking algorithm is different than the regular Google ranking algorithm. PR farming works great with youtube, especially since Google pulls the video based on the youtube algorithm instead of the Google algorithm.

No difference in video ranking as of right now. More people are doing it and you're seeing it more often because of marketers and their products and spamming videos throughout cities to rank for certain terms.

Do videos only rank in a google.com search? I have two local term videos ranked in Google.com but not ranked in .com.au

I have been doing video optimization for youtube.
Let me tell you what you need to rank your videos.
Optimize your videos according to the keywords or what ever you have made it for.
Proper use of title and description.
As many views you will have for that vide, that will be plus for you.
Share it on other video sites.
Put some good comments and star and likes so that it get populars.
As every one said here do some good link building as this is the key point.
And after few days you will see your video is on TOP.
