Today is the Day! After a year of lurking and inaction, I'm going to truely begin my offline career.

I've been lurking this forum for over a year and a half now with minimal success in the offline industry. Today I'm going to change all of this by taking action and finally getting new clients. Before I begin, I want to explain who I am and how I got to where I am today. Sorry if this is a little irrelevant, I feel I need to everything about my past and start new in this industry.

I graduated college in the summer of 2010, with limited work experience, I had a tough time finding a job. I had some savings and opted to instead create a travel website. I knew nothing about the internet at the time or even the travel industry. I created the website mainly to have fun and see where it takes me. As I looked into getting more traffic to the my site through Google, I found a few websites that taught the basics of SEO. From there I did my research and learning and decided that this could be something that I do.

I started the rent a site model in April of 2011. I purchased a few sites and had them ranked by July of 2011. At this point, I needed to find clients to lease these sites too. I brainstormed a few options, all of which did not involve cold calling. After a month with absolutely no results, I determined that cold calling was my only option. I made about 4 calls and quit. I told myself "I don't know what I'm and I'm not going to be able to sell these sites." I began to look for a salesman and justified it by asking myself how I would sell anything with absolutely zero experience. I chose to hire a salesmen with 15+ years of experience.

Of course, as you can imagine, results were minimal. I was almost paying 100% of the firsts month rental income to the salesman. Again, I justified this in order to avoid calling on my own. This continued for the next few months, averaging about 1.5 sales a month and only a few hundred dollars of income. I switched salesman a few times, and at my best I was making about $4000/month. I had two rental clients and a lead gen ( pay per call) client paying $1000+.

This lasted for about a month and a half until panda hit in the middle of February. I lost two of the sites and was left with one high paying client and a few others paying $200-$300.

I hired a few more salesman in February, and from that time until now, I did not pick up a single client more. Here I am today, generating about $1500 a month and at the point where I can't keep continuing this if I don't start making money. I am feeling pressure from my girlfriend and family to either get a 9-5 job or start making money. They don't know my secret of never making a cold call. I am ashamed of it myself and too ashamed to tell them that I've been outsourcing the calling.

The thing is, I dont even know why I'm so scared of picking up the phone. I know they aren't going to hurt me and that a "no" isn't the end of the world. I've never been yelled at or chewed out over the phone (during my handful of calls). I also know its rare to be chewed it, if it even ever happens. I am not an extrovert, but that isn't an excuse for me not call these local businesses.

Today is the day that I take action, I am doing a modified form of video marketing and I have a decent sized lists of businesses to call. I've seen a lot of successful warriors post on this forum, and I want to be the next one that does. I know I have a great products and if I sit down and make these calls, I'm going to get some sales and money coming in.

I'm using this post to be held accountable and will be posting my results daily. I will begin my calling at 10:30am PST. I will be calling east coast businesses hoping to catch them after their lunch break. I've done enough reading about cold calling and I'm going to put it in practice today, doing modifications if necessary.

No more excuses, my offline business starts today.

What exactly do you mean by "video marketing"?

Just know that you may be hung-up on, chewed out, or any number of other things, BUT you will also talk to people who are interested in what you have to say. You may hit your first yes after your first 100 calls or your first call. I don't know when it will happen; however, I do know if you keep calling it will happen. Many of the stories on here about generating several thousands of dollars within a week of cold calling are true. I know because I did it too. I know if you don't give up it will happen for you too.

Just know this, calling is the fastest, most efficient and cost effective way to gain new clients; but you may have to send them mail, emails or visit. As you get more comfortable with what you are saying to your prospects the more you will close them. After each call do a quick analysis of what happened and tweak anything you think you need to. There are many good phone scripts on here, tips on getting past gatekeepers, and closing, just do a quick search.

Cold calling by telephone is a numbers game, you will increase your number of closes by getting more comfortable with what you say and over coming their objections.

Remember, each "NO" is getting you closer to your next "YES". Keep dialing.

I wish you the best of luck! I have no doubt you will succeed, it's a numbers game. If you can get over the fear of calling people, it's a no-brainer that the more people you call the more people will buy from you resulting in the more money you will make. Just keep your end goal in mind and get on that phone!

I can't wait to read how you're getting on, be sure to keep us updated.

      All the best

    Update - 6-11-12

I finished my calling for today. I wasn't as consistent as I would have liked to have been. Took me about 3 hours to make 25 calls. I am very slow on the dials and not eager to make the next call.

    25 Calls

Left mostly messages for about 20 of the calls. Spoke to a few and rescheduled the call for another day. I did have two decent calls.

    1. I called and spoke to the office manager of a 3 location auto repair shop. She said he budget was full, but she'll think about it. I asked If could follow up and get a yes or a no answer in a few days and she agreed to that. Most likely a no, but it was good experience talking to somebody.

    2. The second call was not how I expected it to go at all. I called and spoke to the reception of a dental office, she had a hard time understanding what I was saying and after I explained why I was calling she went to get me the person to talk to. I was on hold for about 7 minutes before she hung up/call got disconnected. I called back and the person who I was supposed to speak to picked up. She said the office manager was out, but I pitched her anyways. She said she will let the dentist know. (I've heard this line a few times already today, and wasn't expecting much). About an hours later the dentist calls me back and asks me a few questions and decides to use my services. I was only asking for $200 so it was a pretty easy decision for him. He told me he is going to do it, and to call back next monday when his office manager gets back from vacation to get the CC.

Seems like I'm going to get this guy, but I'm not too excited since its not official yet. After the first day of calling, things went pretty well. I need to hit the phone harder tomorrow and make more dials.

Overall I made about 25 calls and left mostly messages. 1 looks like a go, 1 is probably a no. 23 that I still need to reach and pitch too.

That's not too bad of a day! Congrats on taking a huge positive action today.

Need to get your call volume up, if you can hit 50 people a day telling you "no", you'll be well on your way to making some great money.

Instead of being afraid to pick up the phone, imagine you are calling to "learn" about someone.

They will never see your face anyway, so why should you be ashamed? All in all, if things get worst, you can always laugh at the end

Try to be not too stressed out in the business and you'll find your way out.

Yep, Jason and/or John are amazing on the phone. After just a few conversations with Jason, and reviewing his free materials on his website... my perspective on cold calling has totally changed.

I still am not a rabid fan of it or anything, but the other day... I made 11 calls and got 2 appointments for this week.

    Update - 6-12-12

Started off strong today. Did a followup call from yesterday. The guy was interested in letting me speak yesterday but just wasn't in front of the computer. Got him in front of the computer this morning and we ended up closing the deal. Small City and small niche so only charged $100. Felt like he wasn't really the type that wanted to spend a lot of money. Actually got the credit card today as well so this is my first official payment that I've called and earned on my own.

Otherwise it was a pretty slow day. I again only made about 25 calls. I need to make sure I stay focused and that i keep dialing. I got a few strong "No's", 1 Hang Up right when I introduced myself as not a customer, and not a lot of overall interest today. On my plate, I have maybe 3-4 people are interested that I will be following up with.

    Side Question
    1. What do you guys use for keeping track of your calls and progress? Right now I just have excel and I am color coding the boxes. Its getting a little hard for me to keep track of everything at the moment.

    2. How long should I wait before following up again? I called and left a few messages for owners/managers on monday, should I be calling them back again tomorrow?

    Update 6-13-2012

9am PST - Not Looking forward to todays calls. Even though I have had much better success than I anticipated over the past few days, I'm not looking forward to calling more business's today. I'm going to do it regardless, but just not feeling so hot about everything. Going to maybe watch some youtube videos for a little bit for some inspiration/motivation.

Burger - get off youtube and PICK UP THE PHONE! I was in sales for a large company for about 8 years and spent much of the last few years prospecting. Just a couple thoughts from me:
    - cold calling isn't always fun.... but when you finally hit those calls that go JUST RIGHT and turn to CLIENTS, you'll be absolutely giddy you made yourself step out of your comfort zone!
    - set tiny goals. For instance, I get the ball rolling by committing to myself to make three phone calls by 9:00 (or 9:30 or 10:00 or whatever) and don't let myself off the hook for those three. Anyone can make three phone calls, right? I know that after the initial three, I let myself do whatever - and more often than not, that whatever is to keep on making phone calls. It's sooo much easier to get excited and keep going after the first couple - otherwise, I find myself procrastinating until people are leaving for the day. :S
    - keep in mind you're not in front of them, and they don't know you. It doesn't matter one bit if you say things perfect, totally screw up, or what. Worst case scenario - if you get too flustered to continue - act like your phone's cutting out, hang up, and know you never have to call 'em again. On to the next one. Things will start flowing much more smoothly.
    - I, too, keep an ugly but functional Excel spreadsheet where I log all my calls (even the no's & hang ups - be sure you try to at least catch a decision maker's name or email, and call those back at a later date - you'll be surprised by some of them!). I'm sure there's a better way, but I like being able to scroll through and see where I am with everything at once. Name, phone, email, web address columns to the left. Farthest left column is where I make notations with date for f/u and important notes (CB 6/14 to confirm), then color code this field depending on hotness. First thing I do is scroll through this column and make any calls necessary for that day (of course, you could also just sort by this due date, but I like to order mine differently). Columns to the right I use to log each call in my ugly shorthand - VM NM (got voice mail, no message), LVM (left voice mail), LM w/Anna (handwritten message and with whom), NI$ (not interested due to price), or any kind of quick notes about conversations.
    - I'm a doodler - so, say I want to make 40 cold calls in a day - sometimes I'll draw 40 circles to color in, or 40 lines to check, or whatever. Then I find myself pushing more (almost competing with myself) - like if I hit 20 in the a.m., I'll start crunching out more calls to see if I can get it down to where I need 10 in the afternoon - silly, but it helps me feel like I'm getting things done.

    GOOD LUCK!

Thank you so much for the tips, I am implementing the circles technique to reach my goals. I gave it a try today and I really like it. The only problem I had with it was remember to mark the circle after each call. Thank you!

    Update 6-13-2012

Finished calling for the day. Wasn't my best day by any means. Had one solid contact with an office manager. She was very interested but has to present it to the boss. She told me regardless that she will phone back to tell me yes or no. We'll see how that goes.

Made about 20 calls in total, which is a little disappointing. All others were not available to take my call. I have some major followups to do tomorrow. I am disappointed in myself and I need to make more calls tomorrow. I know I'm never going to make any sales being afraid of the phone. The thing is, I don't even know why I'm afraid. They aren't going to hurt me, they aren't going to kill me. I might feel a little embarrassed for a second if I say the wrong thing, but even then, there is nothing to be scared of.

I'm prepping my list for tomorrow, and I'm going to make sure I call at least 50 businesses. I know 50 isn't a lot to most of you on the forum, but I have a highly targetted list of prospects. I have about 100 prospects that I can be calling so I'm hoping for a conversion rate of maybe 10%. Maybe its a little high, but this is what I'm shooting for at the time being.

    Update 6-14-2012

Made about 35 calls today which is a lot better than what I've been doing the past few days. I got through my first 15 really quickly and somewhat tapered off at the end.I've been planning to do two sessions. One AM and one PM, but I always have a hard time starting off again after lunch.

Out of the 35 calls, I got quite a few hard No's. Maybe about 6-8. I spoke to maybe 3 business owners that are interested in the service, and had decent conversations with 2 office managers/gate keepers. Both said they will be passing the message on to the owner.

I'm a little disappointed about the instant No's that I received. I understand they are part of the sales process, but I didn't even get to show them a sample of what I do. I'm thinking about adjusting my pitch so that I can speak to them a little more and explain how this can help their business grow. I will be working on my pitch tonight/tomorrow and doing a few followup calls as well.
