New Sales job on Monday....how should I prepare?

Hi Guys,

I posted this in the off-topic forum, but then someone recommended that I post it here since many people here are proficient at sales.

So, the time has come for me to start my new job. Starting in sales at a small software company on Monday. I'll basically be the second sales guy on the team, that's how small we are. We're selling a software product that prevents hackers from stealing your personal information using prevention, detection, and mitigation methods.

I haven't worked a sales job in almost 2 years, so I'm a bit unsure of myself in this regard. Just wondering what I should do between now and Monday, what I should bring, and any other tips/advice people might have in order for me to get started on the right foot. Since the job will involve alot of cold calling and selling over the phone, I picked up and am reading the book, "Smart Calling" by Art Sobczak. I was also given a few white papers to review.

Looking forward to reading what you have to say. Thanks.

Chad

    Hello!

If you want to improve your salesman skills, I highly recommend you to study the material of 2 leading mentors: Brian Tracy and Shamus Brown.

I am currently working on mastering the "Advanced Learning Techniques" (audio course) taught by Brian Tracy. It's simply GORGEOUS!!!

Since I'm only 18 years old, I don't have much cash to spend. I am a noob at IM as well...

Anyway, I found a TON of their stuff available for free in peer to peer networks, torrent sites, etc.

I'd suggest you do so if you don't wanna spend money for now. But I give my word that I'll pay every cent back after making some money.

    Please do so as well!

    Take care, Chad

I'm sure you're gonna rock your company and skyrocket their sales like crazy!!

PS: start by learning the "Advanced Learning Techniques". Learning how to learn is the ULTIMATE skill...

Wake up early, and visit your local library. Bring a notepad and a pen. Take a look in the sales/marketing section and pick up copies of quality books on selling (Brian Tracy for example) and read. Read some more. Take notes. Implement on work day.

You can also try a tip that was in "No Excuses." Set your goal to call 100 numbers - do not focus on closing. Just call. The faster you fail, the quicker you'll succeed!

Sales, sales, sales! The best advice I can give is be enthusiastic and be willing to learn!

The good thing about this business is that "People don't succeed cause they aim too high and miss, no, they aim too low... and hit. Most people don't aim at all." (Les Brown)

Not us... Not marketers. We live far above mediocrity. Always keep this in mind at all times..

I guess my concern is that I still have quite a bit to learn about the product/technology as well as the day-to-day duties. There's one other sales/manager type guy in the department. I'm wondering if they'd allow me to shadow him to see how he does things during the first week before I'm banging out calls and setting appointments.

Most companies seem to have training in place, but this company is small, so who knows if they expect me to be banging out calls my first day. I'm confident I could be effective once I get up to speed. Just need a bit of time. Isn't that typical in setting expectations?

That's right! Follow him around, if your company won't give you any training session. That was exactly what I did when I got my first sales job.

If he annoyed (he shouldn't, but he might), just tell him sincerely that you need to learn FAST from the BEST salesman around, so you can HELP him increase his commission and make yours.

But, the most important thing that will help your first day at the office (and your whole career days) is ENTHUSIASM.

    Good luck!
