Idea - Birthday Direct Mailing

So I got this idea...

To create this direct mail marketing tool for businesses...where they pay to advertise in this "bundle" that would be sent to a targeted lists of people celebrating their birthday during a specific month!

Why? Well, who wouldn't open an envelope or a folded card saying "Happy Birthday"...and then you get up to $200 worth of gift cards inside! How exciting would that be!! I'll have to test it out to see the ROI but I believe it would be higher than the usual direct mail.

Thoughts?

It's definitely a good idea, it's a method I include in one of my reports and even had samples sent to a few hundred members.

Infofree.com is a great place to pull the lists for it cheaply.

I've seen businesses have a lot of success following up with clients by email in the month of their birthday with some kind of gift offer.

An example would be giving a free meal to someone who is having a birthday.

No one eats out alone on their birthday, they tend to drink a lot and they usually have dessert too so giving away that single free meal can bring in quite a lot of business.

      Kindest regards,

This post is why i have come to love WF, i have doing DM for years, and more of it then i care to admit, and sometime you get so bogged down, in what your doing,
you forget or miss some of the simple things.

This is one of those ideas.

I feel like i should have thought of this years ago.

Great idea! .. the "bundle"...could be a monthly coupon booklet containing heavily discounted coupons.

...And, you could charge each business a monthly listing fee, to be included in the booklet!...

The only hard part would be getting the birthday gals and boys to sign up for the mailing list. Any ideas how you could do that?

I don't get it. The OP is saying that a birthday guy/gal would receive a birthday card with $200 worth (or so) of GIFT CARDS, stuffed in the envelope together with the card. What is so exciting about that and how are you AND the biz going to make money?

YOU are saying BOGO, free drink or %-age off, which makes sense. Nothing new though so I am still wondering where all the excitement is coming from...

Similar to Pizza cards or other coupons, the business gives a "gift card" - could be of any amount... without restrictions is best - it has to feel like a gift.

The businesses would pay a fee to be part of this direct mailing - as in any other direct mail. But this direct mail would certainly be WAY more efficient for a few reasons.
Targetting birthdays - it feels more PERSONAL to the person receiving it. Who wouldn't open an envelope or card saying "HAPPY BIRTHDAY"...
Second - They would need to log in to activate their cards, in return giving us access to their email addresses. This is where part of the gold resides. You also create an email mailing list!

The companies participating would also get promotion on the website as well as access to the email lists.

While searching the web, I found a similar business idea:
        LWC

Did a little digging - seems like it's working!

YES, the Birthday approach works! Even with a single business. (Although I do like the combined businesses on a card very much too!)

One of my clients runs an Auto Detail shop.

We tested a 4" x 6" postcard made to look like a 'Gift Card' (good for $25 towards a full detail). It was printed on simple white card stock ... colored printing ... mailing done through Click2Mail (online).

Rented names of people between the ages of 30 - 60 ... married ... living within a couple of zip codes surrounding his business, not more than a few miles away. All of these folks were celebrating a birthday in a given month. Used an expiration date on the card of 30 days.

Keep in mind ... whenever a person gets this type of card ... 1) they are surprised because no other business does a mailing to them on their birthday ... 2) since the business is 'local' ... the mailing almost feels 'warm' to the prospect because at least the auto detail shop is within close proximity to their home.

On the mailings we got a 2.0% to 3.5% response ... when I say response... I'm talking about actual ORDERS ... paying customers coming in... taking him up on the Full Detailing of their car or truck. They got the birthday postcard mailing and simply phoned the auto detail shop for an appointment.

Lastly, the average sale of an auto detail shop is high ... depending upon where you are located in the USA ... service can go for $75-$200 ... depending obviously upon the type of car or truck too.
