How much would you charge to be a webmaster, social media manager, marketer?

My 1st clients (dentist;50k/yr practice) contract ends soon. I built his website, main social profiles (FB,TWitter,), YT videos/account, directory profiles.

He is my first client and got me dirt cheap (needed to build my portfolio) for the work I've done for him. I have been giving him promo advice and other freebies/discounts on chargeable services (graphic design, email marketing)
The contract is up soon and he wants to know how much I would charge him to fully run the social accounts, be his webmaster and do email marketing. (i am also working on getting his direct mail business)

How much should I charge for these services?

$1500.00 dollars and I would not go lower unless youm are just getting started. You will learn very quickly, if you don't have a high vaule of your services your customers want either.

Don't sell your self short. You know more about what you are offering than they do.

Stand your ground, you will get a better client.

basically using his existing clientele to spread the word. He doesn't know how. Running office promos through FB TWItter, raffles, water bottles after visits anything else I can think of..ongoing promotion (I want to be his one stop marketing go to guy) took this job cheap planting seeds along the way. made a short contract on purpose to get my (hooks) in him so deep he can't say no. At least that's the plan, but he is cheap or I just haven't cracked that nut yet. I won't go below $500/mo AND only for 2 of the mentioned services.

Around $1.5K like he said sounds about right. But of course, for a better estimate you should be more specific in the amount of work you do.

see that's what he wants and I am not sure what specifics he wants (will convince him I am worth it).

Do I list every single detail of what Im going to do daily? weekly ? monthly?
or do I list what I do and what the end result is supposed to be?
I Keep reading how I should tell the client what the benefit is not the technical aspect.
I need to find an example of a kick ass way to get that across and build on that to suit my needs.

Do not be TOO specific that is a terrible thing to do. You don,t want them to start counting and telling you : "did you really put 2 hours there?"

Tell him grossly what you will do, in categories and do put emphasis on the fact that IM is something that varies alot. All he wants to know is, does he pay for what he gets.

Take a look at this thread it will help you.
    http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...per-month.html

Be sure to look at the sample of his letter/mailer.

You are in California, if he had to pay a Social Media Manager/Marketer, on salary, it would be in the low six figures to start. Let him know that by paying you as a contractor he saves lots of money on payroll taxes, workman's comp, etc., and he can now 1099 your services and write them off on his taxes as a business expense. He benefits all the way around -- he gets new business, makes more revenue, and get a tax write off.

    Let me flip it round...

In the time you have been working for this guy, how many new clients can you say that you helped him generate?

Let me add to what Chris wrote: And how much money have the clients your efforts brought in paid the good DDS?

Don't make it about the hours it takes you to do the work, make it about the value your work has to the dentist.

In other words, charge for your skills. Two examples:

you bring the dentist $1,000 in extra revenue a month
you bring the dentist $11,000 in extra revenue a month.

The way I look at it, the 2nd scenario has more value to the dentist and should, therefore, translate into more money to you.

If you were to get the dentist an extra $11,000 a month and you worked only 1 minute, it's still $11,000 extra.

If you get him $1,000 only but that takes you 20 hours, it's still only $1,000 extra the dentist gets...

No matter how you look at it, your value to the dentist is directly tied to the additional revenue you can bring in and has no correlation to the amount of work it took you to bring it in.

If that were not the case, I'd take 100 years to rank someone on page 1 in Google and collect millions of dollars for the time it took me to do it.

I am very cautious about lowering my fees just because I want a new customer. I would rather walk away from a sales then do that simply because if my services have value - and I really believe they do - then discounting them will lower the value of what I offer in the customer's perception as well.

I learned a long time ago that in sales, it is always price and never price.

What I mean is that a customer, or unsure salesperson, will always try to lower or justify the price.

A confident salesperson will explain the values and justify the price to the customer without explaining the price to the customer.

I don't know if I explained that clearly, but I hope you get the idea.

I would shop around and find out what the "going rate" for the services I am offering is and then position my price a little higher. I NEVER want to be known as a discount provider of services. I want to be known as a provider of services that ALWAYS charges more and ALWAYS over-delivers.

You will earn referrals and brand loyalty by doing it like that.

And since you are dealing with a dentist perhaps this story/joke can put it in perspective.

Guy goes to dentist and needs teeth pulled and asks how much?
    Doc says $150
Guy says How long does it take you?
Doc Once you are numb, usually less than 5 minutes
Guy-Holy Crap $150 for 5 minutes of work
Doc-Well I can take longer if you would like

Focus on the value provided rather than on the time spent to do it.
Also isnt 50k a year dentist kind of low, did you mean 50k per month?

Wow..a lot of great responses here! Thank you everyone-solid advice.
I ended up "settling" on email marketing and webmaster for $500/mo. He leaves me alone with no expectations for sales, I just make minor backups/updates to the website and send a link once a month for his newsletter.

He just doesn't want to pay. I told him before I began I would not build a website for him if I can't do the marketing for it too. Otherwise it was a waste of time for me and him. Now it comes down to it, he only wants maintenance. We shall see how it goes.

@fdamours - I ended up not being too specific so I couldn't be nailed down. Thank you
@digichik - I will take a look at the link, thank you. Yes being in California and in a competative niche, you have got to stand out. I need to get better at my presentation. I am not a saleman. I used to work as a dispatcher/warehouse, so sales is new to me.
@iamchrisgreen - as always solid info and to the point. I follow you here on WF. I have only brought him 10. BUT that was because he only half assed the info I gave him on the promo and is STILL not running it properly. Makes me angry, because I know the return could be SOO much better.
@stripe - you are right. I don't want to lower my prices again. He got me at a time when I was desperate.
@dabk - I love that example. I am going to use that from now on.
@eddiespangler - That's perfect, I'm going to tell him that the next time I see him. Thanks!
