Offline Restaurant Niche Tips and Add-On Service

I had posted previously about how I am doing a lot of local restaurant websites in my area. I ran into a guy who sells POS systems to restaurants, and we set up a "referral" system if you will, and any clients he sends my way I give him a piece of the pie. So far so good, since he goes door to door to restaurants anyways, it was a perfect partnership for us. Restaurants are EASY sales, and a great way to get your foot in the door.

Anyways so I've ran into this guy who has a relatively popular restaurant in the area. He has a lot of TV's in his restaurant and he was telling me that when there isn't a game on, he finds it hard to have something to play on the TV. After I made his website, he wanted me to find a way to put his site on the TV's, but I told him that wouldn't be a good idea since the customers can't really interact with it.

So . . . I suggested how about we make a "visual menu" which would be like a video slide show of all the different plates he has, and maybe add some music, and let it loop on some of the TV's when there is nothing else interesting on. I had already done the work, and taken pictures of his dishes and did a "visual menu" (slider and gallery) on his site, so I thought to myself it would be a piece of cake.

So that was my new add-on for him, and from now on I will offer local restaurants a "visual menu" service. All you really have to do is take some pictures of their food, edit them, add titles and music, and save it as a video on an SD card. Most TV's have SD card slots.

The cost of this is pretty much your time to take the pictures and like $10 for a 512 or 1 GB SD card. Add some music and titles, and bingo! New add-on to websites, and seo service. I had originally asked my customer for an extra $500, but he added other monthly services like social media management so we agreed on $400.

Today I suggested the idea to another one of my customers, and he really liked it, and he doesn't have TV's with SD slots, but he said he would buy new ones in order for this to work in his restaurant too! I think once you tell them " hey bob down the road is doing this" it turns a light bulb in their head. I have only tried this with 2 customers, so by no means am I an expert, but I think I'm onto something. Still thinking about packages and pricing for this, any suggestions or ideas on how to improve this?

  • I'm really excited about this, I got a third customer today. I'm guessing not a lot of people on here work with restaurants. Not a lot of feedback.

I haven't done any offline marketing with restaurants but it sounds like an awesome idea. I was in the restaurant industry 20 years before going "all online" and I know many restaurants that would have loved that...my mom owned several restaurants and bars and I am sure she would have gone for it. Great Idea!...perhaps another side business for me

Charge more for your services. It may be easy for you to do, but your clients have no clue.

Look at the value you're creating for them: for every person who spends an additional $10 a day because of this (say by getting a more expensive meal they wouldn't have been tempted to without seeing your display), that's an extra $3650 a year in revenue. Doesn't take long to multiply out to big numbers, does it? And don't you deserve a larger share since you came up with the idea?

Great idea!.One possible way to enhance this, would be to say add a QR code to this visual menu to link back to their restaurant website for maybe a coupon when they optin etc...another way for the restaurant to build their list.

Thanks for the feedback, you are right, I can start charging more, because nobody else is currently offering this in the area. Also this is a great option for the people who think they don't need a website. This way you get your foot in the door, and later add more services once they like and trust you. If you do any offline services, I would do this as an add on.

I am currently working with a client who does massages at a salon, and we may incorporate it there as well. So clients can see the different kinds of massages that are offered, and other services the salon has.

This really works for a lot of industries, the idea came to me at a restaurant, but you can really use this in a lot of offline businesses.

Excellent post and info. I might add, I am a huge fan of XBMC on whatever little computer you can get. Even old appleTV2's. The SD slot is fine, but if you go google xbmc and play around with it for a couple of days, you will probably get a lot of interesting ideas from it - worst case you figure out how to have a killer media center at home. Just setting one up retail for a home system should be about 500 to 1500 just for the time and hardware.

Quick rundown - XBMC plays any kind of media, on any kind of computer and can hook up with any kind of tv (depending only on the kind of outputs the computer has, mine has hdmi as well as s-video).

It does slideshows automatially with picture albums local or from an online source.
you can hook it to a youtube channel and play his commercials.
it can play any audio/video file
and its just the coolest thing ever.

So, there is some tech to consider. BTW, an appletv2 on ebay will run you about 100-150; then charge him up to whatever to "install" the system.

Offer them social media and mobile marketing services, they are both great add-ons for restaurant marketing.

Sounds like a great concept, thanks for sharing.

Question, How would you go about having it run in between sports program so that the staff do not manually have to insert the SD card in between programs?

      Thanks,

Evan, I believe using a remote to change the input source would do the trick. Very simple push of a button.

    That's a great idea.

You could also make a great deal with a TV dealer and offer a full package, with TV and set up if they don't have a TV yet..

Perhaps the restaurant owner would be interested in advertising other local businesses in the area, and taking a share of the advertising revenue ? I have seen this at a local children's play area, where they have quite a captive audience - bored parents looking after their children.

As a matter of interest , when you publish your slideshow on an SD card, what format does it take ?

One thing I do for the ones that don't have the tv's with the sd card reader, is to use a program such as convert x to dvd and make a video that can be played on a dvd player and looped within the program. That way you can have even more room to leverage your idea with something the customer's can understand if they don't go for any other add ons
