Couple Quick Questions for the LinkedIn Pro's Out There

I just started to use LinkedIn after realizing how great of a tool it is to connect with others and generate leads. I built up my profile and joined a couple local groups, but I'm still having trouble figured out a couple things.

So, if you're a LinkedIn Pro, I have a couple quick questions:

1) Is there a way to send messages to others that you're not connected to other than using the InMail feature?

I don't want to pay $39+ per month to be able to send 10 messages a month. I'm not looking to spam people, but there are a couple local business owners I'd like to get in touch with and I'm unable to "connect" with them for some reason, which brings me to my next question...

2) How do you connect with people that are not within your "network"?

Let's say I do a search for "restaurants" in my local area and come up with a list of users that I want to connect with. I can see their profile, but am unable to connect with them. I don't even see an option to connect like I do on other profiles. Do some people just have certain profile restrictions that prevent others from connecting to them unless they initiate the connection themselves?

Thanks in advance for the help. I've generated some interest just from a post I made in a local group, but I want to dig deeper and really build a solid network of people within my niche. Just having a hard time figuring out how to connect to them properly.

Great post and great questions, love to see more about LinkedIn and finding new business.

I'm surely no expert on this and am learning, but think I have some insight.

    1. To my knowledge, this is how they hold you. There is a cheaper option for around $25/mth.

    2. Referral. click on 2nd degree and find out if anyone you know is connected to the contact you wish to reach...then ask for a referral or introduction. This is a nice warm lead.

Anyone know of a WSO or training on LinkedIn for B2B sales? Would love to read it.

Thanks for the feedback. The answer to my 2nd question now makes more sense, as I saw they had various "tiers" within your network (I believe it is up to 3, isn't it?). I'm still working on drumming up some of my very first connects though.

The coolest thing that has happened thus far on there was the feedback I got on a post in a group I joined. Had quite a few people check out my local directory and even subscribe to my list, so I'd consider that an early success so far. Now I just have to get that network rolling!

What type of post was it? An answer to a question in your field, a question yourself? I'm encouraged to learn what type of content yields the greatest interaction

It was a post that mentioned my directory and how it was the new way to find local establishments in my city and surrounding metro area.

Naturally, I wrote a headline that was attractive and catchy, but not "over the top" (last thing I wanted to do was have it come off as nothing more than a promo). When I got to the details part of the listing, I wrote up a quick description of what it was, what my goals are with the site itself and my objective (i.e. who I'm looking to work with). After that, I closed it out by inviting everyone to check it out and see how it works.

I nabbed about 20 uniques from the post and had 2 people sign up. Can't complain with a 10% response rate like that though . I honestly wasn't even expecting any subscribers from it.

Bhuff85, easy solution to #1--find the group that they person is a part of (you can see this when you do a search for them or check out their profile). Join one of the open groups they're apart of, search for them under the "members" tab and ta-da! You're able to message them directly, and for FREE, since you're part of the same group as them!

Hope that helps! I do all of my prospecting on LinkedIn and haven't upgraded to their paid version..I may consider it eventually but for now, this little frugal tip works for me!

Thanks for the killer tip Preeti! I downloaded your guide the other day (which definintely helped answer a couple of questions I had in the beginning and was put together well), but still had these other one's floating out there.

Looks like I'm off to see how this will work. This should definitely open up some doors as far as messaging a few people I need to connect with goes!

I am sure all of the linkedin information offered for "Free" is well worth it. I signed up for both offerings, Preeti's report and the 4 video part offered by the pther poster.

However, it isn't free. I had to join their mailing list in order to get their "free" material. I usually don't follow through but since both parties held themselves out to be linkedin experts I thought why not.

Here's my question. If your stuff is so good, why don't you say you can have my stuff if you join my mailing list? Be honest upfront and your credibility stays intact.

Yes, I know I can cancel anytime but building a list with a shady offer makes the offer look shady. I'll watch the videos and read the report. Maybe I'll change my mind.

        Just expressing my opinion.

          Hey Tom,

Thanks for your message. I can understand where you're coming from..but being on this forum and as well, being in marketing, I think it's the norm that any free information that I've received I've given my email address in exchange.

If that person has something of value to say, is genuine and helpful, I will stay on their list, read their emails and yes even buy their products or products that they promote (because I know it's coming from somebody that I trust).

I apologize if you didn't like the approach but at the end of the day, you said it best, you can cancel at anytime.

It is a free report (there is no charge for it!), I put alot of time and effort to make sure it was well worth the download (along with all of my emails that come after you're on my list--actual valuable tips & tricks) AND all I ask for is a way to keep in touch (i.e. your email address).

Will I present my list with an offer? Yes, if it makes sense and I believe it'll TRULY help, then I will. Otherwise, no I won't. It's my name and reputation that I'm not willing to put on the line and break that trust with my fellow Warriors.

I'm not sure how offering a free, high content, helpful report and then following up with tips & tricks on using LinkedIn makes you shady? Wouldn't it be the exact opposite..? Offering you a low quality report and then spamming you with affiliate offers and not offering any "value-add" messages? (which many marketers here have done and I've unsubscribed because there was no respect for my time and they didn't take the time to build a relationship with me).

Don't mean to go on a rant here but I just know that I truly put alot of work into my report and it's helped many others and being called the word "shady" just doesn't sit well with me.

If you have any issues or aren't happy with the report, please do let me know. I'm always trying to improve and do better!

No problem Bhuff..ask and you shall receive! That's certainly helped me quite a bit with connecting with people. Just today, I contacted an association where I hope to be a presenter on this stuff at their annual convention

OK, I ranted in post #7. I watched the videos and read Preeti's book. I still don't like the idea of using free as bait but the material both people have is superb. This ain't a shady WSO review either, it is fact.

Preeti made a post about contacting an association and maybe being a presenter. I think she is on to something and can start making some serious bucks given one or two of these presentations on the resume ups the paycheck. I won't bore you w/my past professional speaking life.

I'm still not over my rant but I did like their material.

Just thouht I'd add to my post...

Thanks Tom for your honest feedback..and yes, it's funny what kind of opportunities come up on LinkedIn..there is so much EASY access to centers of influence and individuals who can help with better positioning yourself and opening doors to bigger and better opportunities.

Would love to hear more about your professional speaking life..I think it's a great way for people to a) overcome their fear of public speaking b) provide great, helpful content to bigger group of people who actually need it (I speak to business owners on a daily basis and let me tell you, they are CONFUSED and need the help) and c) yes, the ability to make an income on the side is a potential too but I'm just aiming to do this for the first two points to start off with.

There's even groups on LinkedIn that allow you to connect with people who are actively looking for a speakers. How's that for making the connection easy?

Thanks again Tom for the feedback..I actually didn't mean to rant LOL I just know I'm a genuine person who isn't "shady" and that word just brings out the lioness in me

              Preeti,

I know you are genuine and you've given some fantastic tips. Hope the OP takes advantage of your knowledge. If he doesn't, shame on him. And, since you mentioned the groups looking for a speaker, my ears perked up. I will play around w/LI and see what I see. I don't mind accepting checks to speak. Love it. My largest group was 20K and my smallest was 10. The checks cashed so I didn't care.

If I get a fire under my belt, I'll tell you all my secrets and that'll make us ranters even steven.

                Hey Tom,

Here's another tip for you--which I outlined in my report--if you're interested in speaking gigs, get people to fill up your profile with raving reviews about your past speaking sessions. Instant credibility and positioning for you so when anybody lands on your profile--they're sold before even speaking with you.

Sounds like you have some great knowledge and experience when it comes to speaking..I really like meeting new people and connecting in person (since I'm mostly behind a computer screen) so that's what attracted me to the idea of speaking in the first place.

Also, upon talking to business owners, you realize how there's so many myths and misconceptions out there about marketing, especially online marketing.

You'll have to share some of your secrets..perhaps a "free" report? LOL

Already on top of that one before I opened up the thread. Preeti definitely helped me realize how using LinkedIn can open up a lot of doors, which is why I've been grinding away on it for the last week or so.

When you look at LinkedIn and the big picture, everyone is there for one purpose - to network with others. I can already see the massive potential that it holds for what I plan on doing. Besides that, it's a great way to warm up potential leads. Rather than going in on a cold call to a business, you'll have that connection beforehand.

For all that have contributed so far, I appreciate it. I'm going to keep plugging away and will let you know how things are in a couple weeks!

I'll probably end up just posting them. That is how I gave away my secrets in the insurance lead gen biz on this forum. 3 people started a lead gen biz (I got that many PMs telling me so that's how I know) off my posts. Hope they made a ton of $$$.

That remark tells me you are gonna be one successful corn fed Iowan. I'd say beef fed but some vegan might get mad ...

Here's my first public speaking secret. Tell people you speak on TOPIC then ask them to let you speak to their group. Plz don't send me your email or name. I don't want it. Just implement the tip and start charging for your service.

If people were interested in learning more I might open a thread. This means the polls are still open so I'll have to wait for the results to my remark.

Now, about the "shady" practice. Yes, you did have to enter your name and email...and of course this funnels into one of my email lists. But I was not trying to swindle you at all. The reason you had to enter your email is because this is part of a membership site...that is also why you had to create a unique username and password. I hope this makes sense...and I do apologize if I was misleading. I did not mean it to appear that way...just wanted to share some linkedin tips. Again, glad you enjoyed the course

I gave my opinion about the practice. I consider it shady.

                    Why?

Let's just say in the old days, IMers used this tactic to build their list and once on, you were never off. I would name names but why get banned?

Today, the Internet has done a great job of cleansing itself, well maybe a good job. But, there are still shysters. Oops, another one of those words.

Notice I did come back on and say your stuff was good stuff and you ain't one of those characters. I said that about Preeti's material as well. In fact, now that I am on both of your lists, I won't get off unless you become a shady shyster.

Truth is if either of you were to do a WSO and wanted a review, I'd be the first in line to review your materials because I now know you "won't BS the troops" as we used to say when I was on active duty.

Other than that, I ain't got nuttin to say...unless of course I do...

Have a great day and keep up the great work,

Tom, first off I'm glad you watched the course and enjoyed it...and I'm glad you see the enormous potential this strategy has if you stick with it.

Preeti is very knowledgeable about LinkIn marketing. You might want to read the posts created by her. I highly recommend her material. I am enjoying her stuff and still digesting.

Another question - Do you personalize your connection messages?

Instead of using the default "I'd like you to join my professional network", do you personalize the message and explain why you're looking to connect with that individual? I imagine that added personal touch will get them more interested, especially if they do not know who you are. Figured I'd get an idea of how others handle that.

Bhuff, I only connect with people who I have some type of interaction with before (i.e. in a group, answers section, via messaging). So usually they already know who I am on some level so I don't have to personalize the message (I get lazy sometimes).

However, if it's somebody new yes, most definitely you should personalize. I would encourage some type of interaction before just connecting with randoms (unless of course you're using connecting with open networkers). Less chances that they'll click "I don't know this person" when responding to your invitation.

As per LinkedIn's website: When you click the "I don't know this person" link after clicking Ignore, this prevents the person you don't know from reinviting you in the future. If someone receives an excessive number of "I don't know this person" responses, they could be restricted from sending invitations to connect to others.

      Hope that helps!

I have to admit, this thread is making me money.

Kid you not. I've been intrigued by LinkedIn for many reasons and have begun to learn the dynamics of uncovering who you need to meet and why, for my own personal growth in life...but at the same time it's a means to find new leads.

I took some advice on here (two days ago!) and begun posting on a single professional group on LinkedIn, our target audience. I only posted to existing posts, and added value or took a controversial approach. I then offered a report specific to Chiropractors if they opt-in.

In two days we've got a handful opted in to our auto responder. The AR has already generated an automatic analysis (without a single call, appointment is booked), 3 attendees for next month's webinar, 2 attendees for the following month. That's a dozen HOT leads, already in different stages of the sales cycle.

All without posting a single new post, and adding value. Holy ****, this is was easier than cold calling!

@Preeti I'm getting to really love it again myself! i just tried posting questions in relevant topics to drum up interaction, and sure enough, it is. WOW!

A Toronto Motorcycle Marketer? Wasn't riding when I lived in Leaside, but if you're ever around Chicago, let's get out! Some amazing roads just north of here in WI. I'm actually coming back home to Tdot in a few weeks, been two years since I've seen Yonge!

Scott, I kid you not, I launched my whole offline business using only LinkedIn..I can't give it enough credit!

Leaside..how very cool..and you ride..well now I like you even more! LOL
Oh it's kicking in the summertime on Yonge St! Yonge/Dundas has become kind of like a mini-Times Square.

Very cool that you're in Chicago, I literally spent, as a kid, every summer, Christmas, March break in the Windy City cause I have cousins there (they now live in Naperville). What a small world!!!

Okay I know I'm totally hijacking this thread with bike talk but what do you have?

Althought I haven't made a lot of connections, my local directory has really picked up some steam since I joined some local groupons on LinkedIn.

Today, I had a guy leave some comments about my directory and how much he liked it. When I logged into my cPanel later this morning and was checking some stats, I noticed I had a FLOOD of traffic from a particularly popular local forum. Come to find out this guy either owns it or is a moderator on there and he posted up about my site. Got quite a few subscribers from this as well.

LinkedIn is definitely the real deal. Can't wait to see what doors it opens up in the future as well! It's proven to be a great way to get noticed and get yourself out there, all without a whole lot of "grunt work" involved.
