1800 number for roofing client?

my client just emailed me wanting to know if i could help him get a 1800 number for him. where do you suggest going for this? what do they run? is there a site you can go to see what names/numbers are available?

    Why does he want a 1800 #?

    They can be the kiss of death for companies. People typically want to know that they are dealing with a local firm. At the one I work for, I can listen to all kinds of recordings of incoming calls, to our head office and franchisees. Our web presence is set up to give people a local site and # if there is a franchisee in their area, but sometimes there isn't a franchisee. One of the first questions people often have is, "Are you local?"

    Phone #s are in the cloud now. All that cable stuff is old tech. There are ways for you to get as many local #s in as many markets as you want for your client, and direct them all to his cell phone or office. I believe this is a much better approach than a 1800#.

    I agree with Jason Kanigan - if he wants to post an 800 number, he should post a local number right next to it for local validity. What we do is get a local VOIP number and put it in our ads next to the 800 number. We route the VOIP number to the 800 number so the call process is unaltered...

    He has numerous different "local" numbers for the cities he works in. Wants a 800 number with the word roofer in it. I have found numerous sources for regular 800 numbers. Not sure how to search to see what 800 numbers with roofer in it are available?

      To see if a vanity 800# number is available, you can check on the desired company/site you're thinking about buying from.

      If you don't have a phone handy (to check what #s spell "roofer"), you can go to PhoneSpell.org.
      If you already have a #, you can see what already-owned #s spell (if they do at all).

      Or, you can go here:CallSource - Vanity Search and enter your keyword "roofer".
      This will generate TONS of available 800#s.

      I already did a search for "roofer" for ya and got back 56 results:

      I can vouch for Jason's comment about local numbers outperforming freecall numbers for local service providers.

      Jim's mowing, the largest lawnmowing franchise in the world,
      for home services, have tested the 2 and will always use local numbers, rather than the free central number.

      Because, the ad reader searchers for phone numbers that are close to them.

      As someone who has a businesses best interest at heart and not a order taker,
      would steer him away from the 1800 number.

    It would make sense if you are using it to track leads generated otherwise i agree with Ewanmack above, give them advice that will help their business and they will like you for it and trust you.

    Callfire works well, and you can use them for both the 800 and local numbers. It is smart to get multiple numbers so you can track swhere the calls come from. For example, you can have one on a billboard, another on the website, and others for offline advertising in different cities.

    You then forward all of them to the same number. You can instantly get a report on actiity for each number and what number the call came from.
