Paypal is trusted by so many people you'd be silly not to offer it if you're trying to take payments over the phone.

Can you enter their CC number into an invoice via paypal? I honestly don't know.

I use authorize.net + freshbooks.com which includes a virtual terminal (on the authorize.net side) that you can enter CC info into if you're sitting in front of the computer.

I also use http://squareup.com for taking credit cards either directly with the swipey thing or entering manually over the phone (into my phone). If you're taking the CC over the phone be sure to not hang up until you have all the info and you've processed the transaction. It's such a PITA to have to call someone back and be like "hey I need your zip code."

I am just now moving to freshbooks over from harvest. You cannot automate recurring billing without the customer initiating the payment. I offer hosting and SEO so I want to make sure my client does not have to initiate service and their service is not disrupted.

Somacorelc suggested Freshbooks to me and authorize.net, best decision I could have made.

PayPal is really the only proper way, trusted and known by everyone. No point getting another one that might offer free transactions or something like that just go with PayPal, can't go wrong with them.

I process and print my own checks. It's quick, painless, and customers have no problem with it. I invoice them through wave accounting, and they pay through one of my websites or I just run it over the phone.

avoid paypal, square and such. try to get a merchant account with maybe authorize.net or merchant one. paysimple.com.
although is you sell SEO is considered a high risk account so you will not get accepted.

PayPal is better for direct payments, from clients and what not. From customers paying through ecommerce a merchant account is better. Your conversions WILL increase.

My vote is for PayPal too, is a huge company and most online buyers use it. Just give it a try and you will see that you will receive very less e-mails asking for an alternative way of paying.

As a Canadian, E transfer is the best option. I have a paypal acct but for me to get my money it takes a week. With E transfer the payor sends me an email and I direct the money through a link and it takes 30 seconds for money to go into my acct.

Paypal is a good start. I've used it to accept payments from my ad specialties clients and it works great. However, I have heard horror stories about PayPal, too, where they've frozen accounts. Eventually, I intend to get a real merchant account or at least do what IamNameless does and print my own checks.

I use Paypal, and have PayPal Here which allows me to take credit cards in person with my phone or take credit cards over the phone. I can also process checks through it. Works great.

For the record: PayPal charges a fee of $35.00 / month to those of which want to accept credit card payments via phone conversation. This is an affordable rate to most but I just wanted to clarify!

Like the user above stated, if you are CANADIAN I beg you to look into Interac Online eTransfer -- it's an outstanding service and works for any client with an e-mail address and online banking.

If you use their new PayPal Here application and run them through your smart phone or tablet (You don't need to swipe the card, you can manually punch in the numbers) they do not charge you $35 a month. Paypal Here is a free download from either Google Play or the itunes store. I have done it myself several times with customers without a problem. When you get to the point of having to sign, I just put "Phone In". Hope that helps.

You should try using kashflow.com

They're incredible. They can take recurring payments, one off payments through direct debit for 1% or a maximum of £2 per transaction and it manages your invoicing and accounts all in one place.

I say start off with Paypal as you're starting out.

If you're in America, check out Dwolla. It's cheaper but it'll require the other user to have a Dwolla account and they'll have to connect their bank acct.

I was going to use Freshbooks + PayPal Pro but realized for recurring payments it is also extra. Freshbooks around $20/mo, PayPal Pro $30/mo and recurring payments $30/mo Paypal pro comes with virtual terminal as well.

But I decided, $80/month for a merchant account is way to expensive and for that price, I can get an actual merchant account.

I am going the WHMCS and CDGCommerce/Quantum Gateway and it's only costing me $5/mo for WHMCS and $10/mo for CDGCommerce and I can take virtual payments and manage all clients through WHMCS. Customers will have a client login for billing within the website as well. I feel this is a much better setup than Freshbooks/PayPal Pro.

$60/mo for PayPal Pro and recurring is definitely not worth it. Luckily, my application form had an error when I signed up today.

I will still however, accept paypal payments from paypal users.

you could try getting a merchant account that allows recurring billing. however it depends on the nature of your business. if you are doing SEO , it is considered high risk and most likely will not be approved

I can tell you right now that any business owner in the UK is going to be very reluctant to give out their credit card details on the phone, to a cold caller. Unless you have a well-known and trusted website brand behind you, it's just not going to happen.

Go and see your bank and ask about opening a small business account so you can accept cheques in your business name as well as your personal name. I'm with LTSB and it's free for the first year.

I would say about 65% of my payments are taken in cash, the remainder split between cheque and direct bank transfer. In 12 months of doing business locally I have not had ONE person who wanted to pay by Paypal.

Hi dennis,
Not sure if you can use these guys or not, but we recommend beanstream or 2co. Stay away from paypal if possible. If you sell too many items, paypal will lock your account and hold it for 6 months.

Who would have thought they only wanted small businesses eh? We learned the hard way...
