Why Marketing Doesn't Work

You already know that ‘marketing is everything’ if you’re serious about solving what’s probably the biggest challenge you face with being visible to enough local business owners to grow and sustain a profitable a local business/offline marketing business, this post will help you move a step closer to eliminating that problem.

Disclosure: This process will not work for everyone. It will only work for people that actually do something as a direct result of reading this and watching the implementation session

Marketing is...?

There are lots of different definitions about what marketing actually is and one that is widely accepted is that it’s

"...about systematically choosing HOW and WHAT you communicate and to WHOM with the goal if securing more of the business you want."

I think that’s a bit dull and boring, but for now, we’ll use it as a common-ground definition to work with. The next question you should be asking yourself is:

‘How do I actually do this?”

That’s what you’ll discover in this short piece.

A Good Starting Point

The late Stephen Covey (R.I.P) advised that we should "...always start with the end in mind." That advice is perfect for being able to figure out what your offline marketing strategy needs to be.

When you understand where you’re going with your marketing it’s a lot easier for you to plan for how to get ‘there’ … wherever ‘there’ is for you. Knowing what success looks like makes it easier for you to plan for the challenges you’ll encounter along the way.

Just like any other strategy (…that’s another word that’s over-used too!), your strategy is your GPS for getting there. The fundamental question you’ve got to be able to answer therefore is this...

“What’s your marketing vision for your offline consulting efforts?”

Implementation Action Point #1

Write it down. Don’t just ‘think about it in your head’ like you do for lots of other things.

The Goal: You want to be in a position to confidently and clearly answer "Why…which local business clients/customers…will choose me, over and above my competition?"

Implementation Action Point #2
Defining Your Marketing Vision
for Your Offline Consulting Marketing Efforts

This area is key, and you’re going to need to answer 3 questions to get the clarity of focus you need for how you market your offline consulting business.

I want you to write down answers to the following questions:
  1. My Market position is ….
  2. My client/customer position is …
  3. How I’m going to achieve and maintain or sustain this new position is …
Asking yourself these questions and answering them ‘correctly’ ('correctly' = based on the goals you have for your offline consulting business) will give you the clarity you need to answer the important question you should be asking yourself each and everyday which is “Why should local business owners do business with me as opposed to my competitors?"

I'm better at explaining things though words than writing, so you're welcome to listen to this as a more in-depth implementation session here
