The Secret To Success: Opening Doors and Creating Luck

So, it's been a while since creating a thread. I decided, some of you think I'm negative all the time that maybe once and a while to keep you from starting a riot and hunting me down to egg my house, I should put something up that's encouraging.

I was just thinking about how many things there are to do when it comes to starting a business. It doesn't matter if you offer mobile websites, website redesign, SEO, SMS, Social Media, copywriting or any other service. You might own a newspaper, or flower shop for all I know, but the truth is that no matter what, there are lots of things to do!

We have accounting, marketing, inventory, technical stuff, operation issues and many more things that we need to do. I don't want to get into all that, all I care to expand on is marketing.

Marketing is a funny thing. We all need it, we all need to market our business or else we don't have a business. Next time that arrogant prick tells you that they don't do marketing, don't question him, just laugh and move on. Why? Because even those that survive on word of mouth, are still partaking in marketing. They still have ads, they still have business cards, they still network and probably have signage at their business location... and guess what? That's STILL marketing. People like that, aren't worth your time.

Moving along...

Marketing is something a lot of people don't seem to understand. There are a lot of debates on here that REALLY are USELESS. It doesn't get anybody anywhere because it's debating intricacies that make such a small difference that it just doesn't matter. People say one thing doesn't work, because they haven't had success with it. Forget those people...

Some people think that certain marketing tactics are a matter of luck. Some people think only one form of marketing is enough.

When I was a kid, I remember being excited to stay in a hotel when we went out of town. I used to run around inside the room, open all the drawers, jump on the bed, open all the doors to see what it leads to. The biggest bummer was opening the door to the other hotel room. You know how some of them connect and have the door that's locked? You open a door just to see another door that you can't open. WTF? That's one of the most frustrating things in the world! LOL

Now, think about how that is relevant to marketing. EVERY SINGLE form of marketing, is a way to open a door.

1 day you decide to pick up the phone and cold call businesses, good for you... but then you get frustrated because you're trying to open doors just to find that there's another door in your face, and it's locked. WELL HOT DAMN, I guess that means cold calling doesn't work right?

So you move on to the next thing, and you send emails, just to realize the same thing has happened. You're probably thinking that all of us that talk about marketing, just get lucky, or it's a myth, or we're just lying to you to somehow profit off your misfortunes down the road.

The way you're viewing things, is so WRONG that I can't help but shake my head when I see someone complaining that something doesn't work.

The entire point of marketing and using different tactics, isn't to expect a hidden treasure when you open a door. Sometimes you'll see a locked door... you won't be able to have success within a certain amount of time. Maybe something doesn't work for you right then, but that isn't the point.

You keep opening doors because eventually there's going to be something behind the door. Someone out there is WAITING FOR YOU to open that door because they're tired of seeing locked doors themselves.

Sometimes, in order to open as many doors as possible, you have to use a variety of marketing techniques. I know some of you know exactly what I mean when I say that you need to have a TRUE marketing plan, not just one trick up your sleeve to make you a couple bucks, but a TRUE strategy that has multiple parts to it that is working together and helping you open the doors you desperately need.

Cold calling by itself can get you results. It's enough according to some people, but for me it isn't enough. No measure of marketing is enough. Emailing people, yeah it can yield some results, but not enough to build your business off of. Direct mail, it's great, but if you're only using that, I think it's a problem.

REAL marketing and advertising isn't about staying comfortable. It's about stepping out of your comfort zone, utilizing tools that complement each other in order to open doors.

For those of you stuck using JUST linkedin, or just email, or just cold calling... I challenge you, to diversify your marketing.

If you're getting results right now... imagine if you had everything working together?

Man, it is AMAZING when I'm cold calling, while posting classified ads, using linkedin and facebook, sending out email campaigns, having incoming calls from direct mail and PPC. It's a FREAKING MONSTER. You want to make 5k/mo and are happy with that, then stick with what you've been doing.

If you want to start making 20K, 30K and MORE per MONTH, start feeding the baby monster you have and soon enough you're going to have a BEAST of a business.

When you have a variety of techniques in motion, you're opening more doors than you could have ever expected to even exist!

You want luck? Open enough doors and you'll get your luck!

    Great Post IamNameless.

I am spending the weekend relooking at my lead generation strategies, and this post came at a really opportune moment.

    Thank you.

Good timing. I've been doing cold calling for months now. On Monday I am launching a full on Craigslist campaign, 5 figure PPC campaign, and SEO for my firm's website. It feels great to have multiple lead generating methods running simultaneously.

Great post! I use a few methods, but certainly need to "branch out" and have a better system in place. I tend to "give up" too soon if a method isn't working. You're absolutey right if you want to take your business to the next level you need a marketing system in place.

hey you aint negative, you just get carried away with the razzamatazz in this place.

Many many succesful business people swear that they couldnt have done it without that 'percieved' negative person in their organisation, the one that keeps things real, the one that understands the metrics of each deal, each marketing strategy and will speak up in meetings to say, 'maybe we should consider this angle before signing', ahhh yes great point, the back to reality guy.

Marketing , the aim of marketing is to make selling superfluous, (Peter Drucker) ie the marketing messages are so strong and so perfectly targeted that its a no brainer to whip the card out and swipe it there and then

We always position our offers that they wil lwork alongside our clients existing marketing efforts (so we do not ever put down what theyre doing at the moment, we do NOT rubbish what theyve done to date even if is it crap) to compliment what theyve acheived so far (recognising their successes even if theyre tiny) and not rock the boat ( few businesses want to totally change angles of attack certainly until they see we know what we're doing so by going in alongside what theyre already doing we make the transitions as smooth as possible )

Multiple cross platform integrated marketing strategies, i love them

There is nothing negative about giving people a strong dose of reality. Some (most) folks just like to have sunshine perpetually blown up their @sses.

They don't seem to care if it works or not as long as it feels good right now because, after all, instant gratification and giving people that warm fuzzy feeling is what it is all about these days.

Still, great read on marketing and the need for many different methods. Depending on just one is dangerous to your financial health.

Great post! In this day and age it's all about diversity. What works today might not work tomorrow and putting all your eggs in one basket is surefire way of not being successful. Having several different marketing strategies is what can set you apart from the other guy.

Thanks, IamNameless for your insights. I agree that you shouldn't put all of your eggs in one basket. There's so many ways to market that it would be a shame to rely on a single source for leads. I'm going to check my marketing plan today as a matter of fact. It's probably time for a revision :-)

Imagine that, a post that says to take action and lists a ton of action steps. Who would have thought taking action makes more money than sitting on your ass and bemoaning the fact the phone ain't ringing or the customers aren't knocking on your door.

        Good post...

Just about my figures for the last 2 months.

Roughly $5k per month, and guess what? 95% from cold calls.

Damn, this guys on the money again haha. Time to try classified ads I reckon.

Now would be a good time to call your clients, and ask if they have told any of their business friends about you. Referrals are the second easiest people to sell (behind past buyers).

Question IamNameless : How many clients would you take on at a time before you feel you are 'swamped'? I have been maxing out on 3 or 4 before getting too 'scared' to try for more. What about strategies to deal with increased workload? Thoughts?

A: Get a cookie cutter offer going that can be systemized.
B: Get an outsourcer who can handle two jobs a day using the cookie cutter system
C: Have a cookie cutter offer, and a cookie cutter guarantee.
      D: Read the book "Emyth".

You can't get too scared, because then your business is not growing. It's staying steady, it's a victim of mediocrity.

To be honest with you, I'm swamped 100% of the time. I never am caught up, I always have projects in queue. The difference is, my turn around changes based on project queue. I have people spending minimum of 1K on a website, and sometimes the project isn't even going to start for over a month. They pay to guarantee their spot in line.

See what that does? You tell someone they can't have something right away, you create anticipation, you create DEMAND.

Increased work load, give a longer turn around time, work more, work harder and be more efficient. I don't know what else to really tell you because I bust my ass in order to be swamped. I sometimes have found that I was off balance in my workload. When I'm working too much on projects and managing them, I'm not doing a good job because the most important thing I can do is revenue generating activities.

Thank you for posting this. There are so many posts on this board about tactics that people confuse for strategy. And I rarely see anyone post about developing a concrete marketing plan. There's always something on cold calling, or direct mail, or email marketing, or LinkedIn, Facebook, etc...but rarely do you see anyone talk about how to put all of these avenues together to create a comprehensive marketing plan. Maybe because it's easier to focus on just one method before moving onto something else - but at some point you have to include several methods because you will not be able to reach all of your ideal clients through one specific vehicle. It's worth it to research marketing plans to get an idea of how to create and implement one. And once you're able to create and implement one yourself to build and grow your business, you now have something else of incredible value to offer the small businesses you work with, which leads to even more income for you. How much do you think a comprehensive marketing plan is worth to a business owner that you create for them and show them how to implement?

    Thanks again for the post!

I have come to conclude many of the people on this forum are here solely to make money off of other people on this forum. Sometimes you can get good information, most of the time you can get information overload and get distracted.

On the other hand, there are people like IAmNameless, who isn't in the business of cranking out WSOs, may have had a WSO or not, I don't know, but who contributes valuable information when asked (or when appropriate).

This is one of those great posts. Thank you, I needed this.

I have all the information and knowledge I need. I DON'T have all the clients I need. Time to focus on what I need.

    Good post.

I always get a laugh at the threads with a headline like
    xxxx VS xxxx

Good marketing is about using everything that works to make you
a profit and (hopefully) combining different methods together
to make them even more powerful.

That applies when you're marketing yourself as a consultant and
it applies to when you're doing marketing for your business clients
    too.

The question shouldn't be "should I use this strategy OR that strategy".

It should be "How can I combine all these strategies to make them
    more effective?"

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh
