Cold Calling: Putting the F U in fun

by cash89

So I am cold calling businesses to make sales. I am trying to make at least 200 dials a day and I am calling from 10am to 8pm.

What I am trying to figure out is how to make it fun so I stay motivated and actually have a good time making all these calls. Lets get a whole thread of ideas going that we can all use when making our cold calls!

Try this: Time yourself to see how long it takes you to qualify a prospect out. Then keep trying to break your record. Bad attitude, can't afford it, etc...look for these signals and move onto the next call. Keep in mind cold calling is gold mining. You can only find 1oz of gold by removing 20 tons of dirt.

Try adding a fun word to every call like piggly wiggly.

Setup an auto dialer on your phone you have an android cell phone ( i do ) not too sure about iphone or any other OS. Punch in all the numbers in the beginning and play video games or listen to music inbetween calling. Try to do something with your hands like drawing or doodling, building those small cars. Cold calling can be fun, just need the right way to do it.

I like to mock the rude pissants about how ridiculous they sound on the phone.

Makes me laugh and dissipates the stress.

This is completely unprofessional and just all around proves that you have no idea what your doing. If you are wasting time doing that, I'd love to see your numbers, I bet they are horrible. Not to mention, I don't know why anyone on here would choose to work with you if that is how you treat any prospective customer, and you are proud to admit it.

To answer the OP, I normally play a game on FB or watch a movie on netflix that I've seen before. Just something to keep the monotony at bay.

        Whoops. Left out important information:

"The phone is ALREADY hung up and I'm dialing the next suspect."

Probably happens 1 out of every 40-50 people I speak with that's either rude or sounds silly on the phone.

I do this all the time. Since I'm calling people in South Carolina it's fun to whip out the redneck voice and say "Ahh ain't need nah websahhht!" It's a great way to remind yourself that you're talking to real people and not just autonomous business owners. Plus it makes me laugh to myself and laughter is the best medicine, right?

Haha yeah, make sure you hang up before doing this though!

To each his own in my opinion. If he wants to exaggerate the accent or poke a little fun at the prospect then that's his prerogative.

To the OP I'd say just soldier through it and try to use be enthusiastic. Get the creative juices flowing, maybe watch a couple stupid cat videos to make you laugh a bit to boost your energy...or drink some red bull and get wings lol.

I have always felt that anticipating all the money and sales I was going to make that day was very motivating and energizing. Keeping your eyes on the prize and ATTAINING it , thats fun.

While you are cold calling keep your eyes focused on what you want and why you are doing it. That will get you to the goal. Dont look at the number of dials as much, look at getting to the goal!

We prescribe a minimum amount of dials, only because its hard to teach people how to keep their eyes on the prize, so counting dials is second best really, but a necessary evil to teach.

Tell yourself I will dial until I hit the goal,.and think of all the money you will make and all the people in your life that you will bless with your fortitude to stay focused unlike many other less focused men or women, because you arent a failure, you have your mind set to succeed.

Then when you succeed, tell yourself "I have these rewards because I was a man among men", and it will be a thing of pride.

Honestly, I know the conversion averages given different variables, but I have never really counted dials myself... I always counted on beating everyone around me no matter what it took (only one way to do it- be focused- The best man wins) , so I could take my daughter home the commission, and be a hero as a "father"... and inadvertently be an example to those around me.

And it worked because my daughter thinks her Daddy can do ANYTHING!

Moral: Its more about the "why" than the "How"...With no script whatsoever you can succeed if you are motivated about your "reason". "Reasons" are stronger than mind games. You dont have to trick your mind, if you are passionate about your "reason".

Agreed, however I have seen a 100 telemarketers be that way, and as a young one I acted out too sometimes...even pretended I was half deaf and things to make my friends laugh and get through the day.

I had a friend who use to make me laugh because he was so good he could get someone on the phone and they would say "who is this?" and he would say "Cmon Marge, you know who this is, my God you sound so young I havent spoken to you in years..."

And she would say "Bob Sandersons?"

And he would laugh and say "I knew you knew who I was, how the heck have you been...?" and hold a whole conversation not even trying to sell her, walking her down memory lane, then he let her go gently with a smile.

Mark Edwards, he was the best guy on my tap crew!

    Ps.
I must tell you Mwind, that I have come to respect your posts more and more over time and appreciate your input today more than ever.

I feel the same. I do believe that it's hard to convey messages on here sometimes, but overall, we all believe in what we do, and we are good at it, or we would not be in business. I think we all have different approaches, and different experiences that build our thoughts and advice, which makes this forum great.

As for the OP, he has clarified and redeemed himself, by stating that he NEVER makes fun of someone while on the phone with them. Which makes a huge difference!

I always try to keep my momentum and energy rolling throughout the day. What keeps me motivated is after hAing the first great conversation about someone who understands and appreciates the reason for why I am calling. I take that positive energy through all the rude gatekeepers, messages being left etc. it all makes it worthwhile once you have successfully hunted down new business.

One thing I have found to be helpful is to take a 2 minute break every 15 to 20 minutes. Refresh the brain, read something pertinent or motivational, then get back on the phone.

A few things I have learned along the way to avoid, that have been pointed out in this thread.
        - Do not time yourself. Focus on quality, not quantity. It is not a race and blowing through leads as fast is possible is a waste of time and energy. Once they are disqualified get off the phone, sure. But don't put the horse in front of the carriage. The goal is to set appt, make a sale etc. not to break a personal record for calls made.

-Do not play video games, read websites, or do anything else while calling. Focus on the call, be in the moment, attentive and alert. When you are uninterested and have attention directed elsewhere, it is communicated no matter how long you have been calling.

-Dont be a jack ass. To what ends does mocking an accent, making a fake conversation or any other inane behaviors accomplish? Focus your energy on things that contribute to your own success and goals, and not things which distract you from it.

        My 2 cents

Good cold calling takes focus - I wouldn't play online games or Warcraft as others have suggested. Put together a solid script, and know it cold. This is not something where you should be multi-tasking. It's a business and should be treated as such.

If this is something that you find boring or don't like doing, then outsource it to someone that does. Go on craigslist and offer up some of your front end to a pro cold caller. Taking some of the advice listed above is a surefire way to waste your time and energy and quickly become burnt out because you have not received any sales.

I agree and I won't do anything until I can recite this particular script in my sleep, however 10 hours of just dialing and saying the same thing over and over will wear anyone down, unless you are making a sale on almost every call.

Some of these ideas seem like they could be distracting to some, but could work for others. The key is already knowing the routine and having executed multiple times.

What i'm doing now is rewarding myself when I reach little goals I setup.

I was shocked to realize the worst part of cold calling is the BOREDOM you get between calls.

That span of time without speaking to someone... the idea of pre-occupying yourself with something to break the monotony up is incredibly helpful to keep you natural and RELAXED.

I used to get bored often when I worked at a call centre, even with auto-dialing software (meaning I was speaking to someone 98% of the time).

I'd usually just scribble on a page while talking, draw pictures, etc. Sometimes I'd re-write leads on sheets of paper to make them look neater while I called other houses after getting an appointment - I'm a perfectionist!

I'd suggest drawing or scribbling on or between calls!

There have been times when I start scribbling the business name as I am calling as well. General ally when on hold and what not. Would mess around with quick logos and whatnot.
