Is it a good time (still) to run a new DEALS website?

Hello Warriors,

The DEALS websites are still going great guns, or so it seems from their promo e-mails that I receive everyday. I'm in India, so I only know about this region. I assume it's good in the USA and most other places too.

Now, coming to the point of this thread... Is it still a good time to start one? Isn't it too late already? I'll be targetting the Indian market itself (at least to start with... to learn the waters of this business well). My question is... Is it worth attempting given that there are at least 8 such popular websites doing this? So fierce is this business that one of them is even airing advertisements on TV.

Also, can something like this be done purely online? Or would a combination of phone/cold-calling and online work? Or is it absolutely a must to get on the streets and into the doors of offline businesses?

Any advice around this or pointers to other similar threads would help a great DEAL.

I think there's a big, untapped opportunity for deals websites in vertical market niches.

Look at what LivingSocial has done specifically in travel.

Think in terms of niche-specific deal sites for targeted interests.

Deal of the day for gardening. Deal of the day for equestrian riders. Deal of the day for offroad racing enthusiasts. Etc...

You do one market correctly, you won't ever get out of it.

That's great thinking ... I like it. Just like vertical niches for directories this could also be applied to DEALS sites.
