How I sold my first website

Thought I'd write this to give inspiration to others who are trying to make this to a full time living whilst having a day job.

A few months ago during my regular day job I was on a development course, the instructor was going round the room asking what we do for hobbies and in our spare time etc. I mentioned that I am learning to build websites and look to do this full time in the future.

He asked if we could talk during lunch and it turned out that his site was built 10 years ago, and looked truly awful. He said that he would rather scrap it than keep it on-line.

What a perfect opportunity! I spent 15 minutes explaining the reasons why he needed a website and during that lunch break I sold him a £200 site and a £20 month hosting plan. Sure I could have asked for more, but this was my first paying client and I was just happy to get a sale.

2 months later he calls me and asks for another website for his holiday home in Florida, another £200 and hosting as well. Then, another call and he was after Letterhead and business card designs. I am now his expert and first point of call.

Funny how this came from a company paid course!

As long as he is satisfied with your work it will become a snowball effect. He tells someone else, they tell some else

Over deliver and you will always have work. Word of mouth is more credible than anything else.

Great job man. Good that you're aware that your pricing is very very low so you can get comfortable with a higher price point as soon as possible. Actually, do it right away even if it might make you uncomfortable. The best way to get comfortable with a higher price is to just make a damn sale!
