He said he wants to be the best when it comes to marketing (compared to his competitors). I'll be doing a new website, G+ local, SEO, videos, all that stuff.

But 3 of the shops are in locations where local searches are probably under 100-200 each month (no data from Google). Are there other services you'd recommend for auto body shops? Newspapers, radio, brochures, local sponsorships....help me brainstorm if you can spare a couple minutes

In terms of traditional advertising, I would first look at frequency mediums such as radio and cable. Then perhaps broadcast, depending on budget, objectives, demographics etc.

I would strongly suggest you stay away from newspapers, brochures, business cards, yellowpages etc.

I have several clients with whom I have set up with new and traditional media mixes and could probably give you some more pointers if I were to know more. If you wish, send me a pm with contact details if you dont want to post the business info online here.

95% of IM'ers have great relationships with clients who also advertise offline and with other people. Stop missing out on that cash and leverage into it. PM me if you are an established marketer and want to find out how.

Don't stay away from newspapers, business cards, brochures, yellow pages. That is terrible advice. Use them all, just use them well.

Normally, I sit down and learn about a business but right away I thought of Joint Ventures. Have the business owner figure out the lifetime value of each customer. Then, how much he can spend to get a new customer. Let's say its $100.
So you can partner with auto auctions. Where after every auction included with the paperwork is info on the body shop. For every customer you get from the auction company you pay the auction company $100. You could do the same thing with towing companies. Towing companies can be contracted by the city or county to remove the cars that were left abandoned on the side of the road. They then sell them to re-coup some costs and generate some more cash flow. Again offer $100 for each new customer.
Contact used car dealers and car insurance companies. The insurance companies are usually run by one guy. Who do you think they call when they get into an accident?
A towing comapny (which you have a jv with) and their insurance rep.....

Again you would have to figure out what the auto body shop could pay. $100 was just an example. I have more but that should get you started.

This. Don't forget injury lawyers. Develop a JV system for them to implement. For example, they send a letter to every insurance agent, towing company, attorney, and roofer in town offering to start a commission based relationship. Why roofers? Hail damage! If this is an area that has hail, cars need to be fixed. Those roofers are out beating the streets.

Car dealerships - don't forget them. They often have excess work, some always sub out their body work, or have jobs they don't like to handle. Also, offer them the opportunity to send a letter out to all car buyers in the last year for a discount of fixing scratches and dings on their cars. This makes the dealership look good for negotiating a discount, and gets some new customers for life. Write a letter to all of the dealerships in the area and test these things out. Send the manger to meet with anyone who responds.

So, the direct mail letter goes out, with the mailing list you built him. When people agree to refer the shop the manager goes, shakes hands, and leaves a nice business card stand with a cardboard graphic (your printing company can make them) to put on the desk. I think a $250 commission is the minimum he should offer. Even $400 would be reasonable.

Create all the Direct Mail pieces, build him the lists, and train his people how to answer the phone and what to do. His staff can mail out a certain number of letters each per day. Make each staff member responsible for a different campaign perhaps.

Advertise to Car clubs - target shows and groups of people who love their cars. If they get a scratch, they will fix it right away.

On another angle, fire up your PR skills and start targeting local radio talk show hosts. The owner can go do a show about the scams in the auto body industry and how to pick a good body shop. Then, in the second half, people call in to ask questions. This can be a full hour segment. Of course, the owner tells people to call him with help for their problem and gives the number, name, and address over and over. He will love you. Tell him he will owe you $1,000 for each radio show you can get him on. It is well worth that.

Another note, this is a friend of the family. Charge good money for all the work. And at least half paid up front. No contingency fees and such. It will only cause problems later. Campaigns this size should be $5,000 or more for the amount of money they can bring in.

I agree with what Prevalent is saying. You should have a short report outlining the scams or problems associated in the auto body industry. Like, : "WARNING: Don't call any body shops in (your area) before learning the 7 auto body scams!"
I am not a copywriter, but hopefully, you get the point.
Have this as a pdf for lead capture on the site, and as a recorded message.
Then advertise this in all the marketing, like the phone book...
Every advertises the same. Name, rank, and serial number. Their company info, they offer the best at the lowest price, blah blah blah.
Your ad would be advertising the report and a teaser on each topic.
This will seperate you from the competition. When everyone is selling, you are educating...and subtly selling..
          Above all test everything often.

        .
The problem is that using the dinosaur yellow pages, or posting business cards on a bulletin board might work well for a 1 many handyman gig. However they do not work well for serious businesses - such as those that have 3 locations and are hoping to dominate. If I were to suggest a business card-bulletin board program to any of my clients I would probably lose all my billings within a month. YP companies are losing market cap at an accelerated rate, newspapers still struggle to fill ad space and brochure kiosks are for dusty tourist info, not car repair shops. Perhaps in his area he can get a killer deal, but its 2012 and it is time to move on.

You are ignorant and this will be my last post with you discussing this topic.
So, let's get the fact straights. He never mentioned business cards. You did, and said they weren't necessary. I disagreed, I think every business needs business cards. Had you said business cards for bulletin boards, I would have agreed with you.
Yellowpages still work. I feel sorry for you and your clients for not knowing how to use them effectively. There is still a percentage of the population that uses them. The cost vs. Return will be minimal. You should use every marketing method as long as you are breaking even.
Brochures kiosks. Wow, things sure do get manipulated in your mind. I never said brochure kiosks. You said tthey didn't work and I said they did. His JV partners can have a brochure with them, for when they go to refer his auto body shop.
Newspaper advertising still works. People still read the paper. You are ignorant to thin they don't. One of the best sections to advertise in the daily paper is in the weather section. Sundays are also great days to advertise because people take the time to read it.
Either offer intelligent advice or none at all. All of the marketing experts will back what I say. You know, the people that get paid $25k a day to speak about ALL aspects of marketing. Do you think they would get paid well if everyone who took their advice had terrible results?

You could send out a postcard using the Every Door Direct Mail service provided by USPS. At this time focus on ranking his site for the most popular local keywords you can find. Also, do some research on your local directories - I'm sure you can find some cheap advertising there that could drive in traffic.

      Hey Dan,

You might want to STOP all marketing before you determine the USP for the business. Without the real unique selling point, all marketing methods implemented will never ever work at it's most optimum ratios
      • talk to the best clients of the business
      • talk to the competitors by playing potential customer
      • talk to the owner and all the staff
      • look at the market to see where the gaps are
      • find out why the true value of the business in the market
Once you have it - use all marketing methods to tell the world. Work inside out of the business rather than outside in. This way you provide even greater value to your current and future clients.

      Regards,
      DT
