SEO Client Expectations -

Hi guys,

I'm interested to know if SEO clients have certain expectations to the amount of links you build for them every month?

Or do they just keep paying if you're results are good?

In the past it's mainly been, if results keep improving - no questions asked.

But if somethings wrong (penalties, dropped keywords) they want to see what we're doing etc.

As Nathan said they don't care about link building reports or stuff like that. Just get them exposure and clients. Make sure you manage their expectations, don't promise them immediate results and let them know it's a process and if they won't have patience for that type of thing. You certainly don't want them as a client so make this crystal clear and find out their comfort level with it.

    That should be done obviously.
There is no reason to think the negative side of that.
If you do wrong then they have the logic to ask you like that.

Promote your SEO business as though you are offering innovative and cost effective services to drive traffic/leads/potential clients. As long as you're following through with what you're promoting, you won't run into a situation like this 99% of the time.

I can almost GUARANTEE that the majority of the clients you'll work with will have little to no understanding of how SEO works. All they care about is seeing results.

    Best of luck!

I agree. I go into a little more detail with some clients that are more knowledable, but provide a report as well. I get the report from BrightLocal.com
It shows the keywords we are ranking for followed by different color arrows.
The green are for position increases
The red are for position drops
The yellow are for no position changes.
It makes it easy for them. Plus, they love seeing the arrows go green.
It means that their rankings are increasing, and what I am doing is effective.
But, I point out that we want to end up in the yellow....meaning we are number one. No more green arrows since you can't get much higher than number one with doing ppc.
I let them know it will take a while, and that is an on-going process. If they stop the serrvice the green/yellow arrows will eventually go RED.

The ultimate goal of SEO is to drive more business through search. The result can be tracked through various sources and we can impress our clients with where they are within search for certain keywords but bottom line what the client wants is a customer to walk in the door with money in hand and spend it as a result of the work you provide for him. The question is are you now building a database of those customers for future promotions and if so isn't that more important to the client. If you are building and managing his database of customers you are pretty much eliminating any chances of him wanting to cancel your services. You are technically holding the keys to the kingdom. If database management is not part of your SEO strategy it should be.

I always provide my clients with a monthly report to keep them updated. It's important that they feel like they should continue to pay, many people out there will think they can just stop paying the monthly maintenance fee because they're ranking well.
