I found a client when I wasn't expecting one

Well I thought that I would just post about how I just found a client at a performance at a local community theatre group. I was talking to a friend at it about my business and the lady overheard us talking and after getting to talk to her she wants a new website and one of the packages that I do. I have the closing tomorrow....

Does anybody else have any weird places that they have found clients without looking for them.

offline marketing sometimes work out well since you are detailing your product and services. Lucky for you someone hears it and have interest on your services.

Personal, one-to-one marketing in indeed high converting, given you talk to the right people. Here in India, people don't trust online freelancers much and are afraid of scams...they go to local (but way to expensive) developers all the time, who ironically code horribly.
I guess if someone with skills starts a local office with a couple of partners and throws some adverts, more earnings can be made locally, then online.

I agree 100%. We all trust people locally more. This is why I am so big on starting your business locally. Once you run out of local clients(can you?) then start expanding. But I would expand to nearby metro areas first. Once you get really big you need to go national and land big clients but start local and you can build a great business. You never know when a local business owner will have a brother who works in the HQ of a fortune 500 company.

    That's great news.

I always find that the smaller (un-heard) of businesses are usually much easier to close a deal with. Finding those who already have a website but you think you can make it better is sometimes a bit more difficult but I am pleased you got a lead just from talking a bit loud

This is no wierder than anywhere else but it was at my car dealer's service dept. Took the new car in for its first oil change and was sitting in the waiting room when this lady started talking to me. One thing leads to another and bingo bammo we are doing her website.

My only regret was I wasn't there all day waiting for major repair work. No telling how many clients I would have recruited.

That's my story. Much like yours it started w/plain ole conversation.

      Good luck,

      Tom
