I started my Webdesign and Ecommerce Agency a couple years ago.

This is how I got my first clients, now I have a steady stream of referrals emailing me weekly.

I Researched all of the local business in my area who either didn't have a website or had a pretty shit website.

I scripted out a letter, the things I focused most on when scripting the letter was to make sure it came of casual and authentic, I generally started the letter of with

Hi [Directors First Name]

Its Tin here,

I made the letter seem as if I was an old friend.
I then hand write all of the letters including the address and posted them off with a First Class Stamp.

Sometimes I'd get a call back with 3-5days, but this was rare, I usually waited 5 working days then I'd call up "warm Calling"

As soon as I'd call I would just say Hey John/Helen/Michael did you get my letter?
They would know immediately who I was and they'd agree straight away for a website if they were interested.

This is how I got my business running, my personal touch was appreciated and my clients started referring me, and now I have a successful business, and am looking to expand my client base as I've hired additional designers and programmers.

It wasn't easy, it takes time, but I guarantee you will get more clients and interest by sending a handwritten letter before you call.

Nice job Tin!!! Keep it up.

Don't stop there, many business owners changes their websites once every 2 years. Keep it in a series of communication if you can:
    • email
    • direct mail
    • calls
    • email
    • direct mail
    • calls

Nice job and congratulations. Its really about taking ACTION and being DIFFERENT. And I appreciate the fact that this doesn't come easy, so there is hard work and a great deal of persistence involved.

Yep, this is where I get the bulk of my business now, client referals and existing clients keeps me busy enough. Once you deliver good service and have a decent sized customer base the need for cold calling / marketing etc grows smaller. However you always need new blood.

But giving good service and getting results for your customers are the best way to grow a sustainable business that keeps growing whether you are actively marketing or not.

The only way for me to STOP making money now is to fire all my clients...

Thanks for the awesome example... being creative and different from the barrage of marketing out there is the way to go. It doesn't take a lot, just some thought and actually doing it. I like our approach.

I use a Marketing Technique called; "Pre-Conditioned Controlled Mailing" PCCM!

      1) I phone prospects....introduce myself, tell them briefly what I do and, "ASK THEIR PERMISSION TO SEND THEM INFO ABOUT MY SERVICE!" (They either say, "Yeay or Nay!"

      2) Send the Flyer or Large Card spelling out, briefly, what I do (2nd time they've seen or heard MY name)

      3) Follow up phone call aiming for a "quick-minute" to visit and explain service further. (3rd time they've heard or seen MY name)

I built my first business from scratch (Home Burglar Alarm biz), with this technique.

Do you recall about how much you had to spend on postage (or about how many letters did you write)?

Thanks for sharing what worked. Always open to trying new things.

I totally agree with the approach to use hand written. Think of it from your own perspective: If you get a piece of mail with typed out addresses, from some company name, that obviously looks like junk mail, what are the chances you would actually act on it, let alone even open it up? If I get a hand written piece of mail, 100% of the time I will open it up. You have to get their attention.

The main message is, be casual, I've been experiemting with email marketing lately, starting my messages with:

    Hey "Name"

Was wondering if you need any help.

So far I've got a 1/50 success rate.
