You#re A Marketer Not A Salesman...

All of us here are marketers not salesmen or women. Some can do both but for many I think that is where we come unstuck. There are all kinds ways and methods for finding new clients and much of this advice is offered in WSO's. Some are good some not so good.

I am not a natural salesman. In fact I am useless at it! I have learned over the years to be better but it does not flow with me and I am uncomfortable with it. I am much happier doing the work myself and/or outsourcing it. So I had a bit of a problem.

So here is what I have done to increase my client base dramatically over the past 6 months.

I hired a salesman on commission only! Simple.

There are any amount of internet savvy sales people out there just dying for a chance to make some decent money and if you are offering offline services these are the people you want to look for.

I do not consider myself a "geek" by any means, in fact I have been a farrier (blacksmith) all my life until a few years ago, so pretty computer and internet literate! But my first salesman thought I was talking cyber speak to the point he could not follow me!

This was an eye-opener for me because these people are NOT internet marketers they talk a different language. They talk like offline business people speak. So all of a sudden you have someone who can speak to your potential clients for you in a language that they do understand.

The only "drawback", if you can call it that, is you will need to train them to your business so that they accurately represent your business. However, I see this as a good investment of my time as I am reaching a far higher calibre of client than I was 6 months ago.

So my tip is, go out and look for some top sales people to do the heavy lifting for you. You can look in jobs wanted or advertise for them yourself. LinkedIn is a good place to check out some top people or try Craigslist.

Best of luck in all your endeavours.

This is an interested statement that you're making, and I agree that many people aren't salesmen. If they relied on themselves to sell their services, they would fail severely. One thing I would like to point out though, is that we are marketers; which means that if we can't sell our own services, what makes us qualified to sell someone else's?

I suppose it all depends on what you're providing your clients, and having someone to help with the marketing aspect of your business is definitely a plus. What I'm arguing is that in order to provide internet marketing services you should at least have the knowledge to do it yourself. Being good at selling will help you so much in this industry, even if you do decide to have employees/salesmen do it for you. Learn how to do it, become good at it, and THEN outsource the work and watch the clients pile up - the knowledge and skills you gained will be well worth your time.

      Agreed! 100% ...

Marketing is not a technical function. Marketing is EVERYTHING that a company does.

If a person designs a website. That does not make them a marketer...

I am a salesman. But I get paid for marketing. I did the same thing. I have 3 sales people who work on commission and I have an affiliate program where I share up to 60% of the sales price with the affiliate network. One of the "problems" we have as entrepreneurs is we think we can, and need to, do everything. That's one of the biggest mistakes to kill business potential. People hire me because I'm better at what I do than they are and/OR they recognize what I do would interfere with what they do if they had to do it.

Good topic started and something people really need to consider.

I am also a Salesman and work commission only, and when I saw your post and was like, "What?" lol.

But I see where you are going with this.

If selling is not your strong point then yea you can outsource it and have someone else who is proficient at it do it for you.

This way you can focus on your business.

There are so many different parts to our business that we truly don't have the time to become an expert in each area.

    Outsource your weaknesses.

    Good job

    I disagree.

    We are all salesman.

We are selling all the time whether we like it or not.

I read quite a good definition once.... Selling is helping people to make the right decision to make a future improvement. (or something like that).

I also thing that to be a good marketer, you need to have the mindset of a salesman built in.

    Here's the big issue ..

No-one wants to look like a traditional sales person. One of those slimy, greasy, in-it-for-themsleves sales people.

But the world has changed. Now we are all selling.

But the best salespeople are the ones that don't realise they are selling.

I studied business (For a semester) and one thing I learned was that marketing is a part of business and also business as a whole. If you can understand that

Call it what you wish but in the simplest of terms:

Marketing is the science of determining the means by which you intend to build your business and sales is one of those means.

Yeah I'm in agreement with chrisgreen here...

We all sell. From the time you wanted your mom to OK that cookie right before dinner to now.

Some people are good at it, some are not so good...but we all sell, every day.

The same thing happens now... but it's my wife I have to convince to let me eat that cookie.

      • IMO

any business person must be 3 things :

an accountant, a salesmen, and a babysitter

(this is my derivative from the original quote I heard years ago - an accountant, a salesperson, and an A__Hole)

thought you guy's might like it!

        I am a business person.

    We're all in sales.

Sales is also about making the case, laying the groundwork and providing arguments and reasoned thoughts to promote or advance a particular point or cause.

You made a case for selling us on the idea (and advancing a point of view that you hold) that we're marketers, not salesmen.

I'm not sold, however. But I get you're point!
