We all know the old adage "it's not what you know, but who you know".How true is this?

Are there any use to make contacts at say, the local chamber of commerce or going to networking events? It's not really for prospecting, more for getting new ideas and gleaning information... Just to see if the ideas would find a receptive audience.

Thanks WF

Of course, networking is a powerful way to market any business. If you can connect yourself with many business owners, the sky is limit for how much profits you can make.

Networking is good but IMO you have to stick with the very basics... Make sure you are dealing with something legal and if you think this is something you want your name, family and friends to be dragged into. This is how it applies with network marketing.

It all depends to what product and services your selling. Networking is effective but it takes a lot process and requirements. Also cost is an added consideration.

I get the networking concept, but have not done the hardwork. Still dont get the feeling that researching, travel time, sitting in presentations etc, is going to pay dividends, versus learning how to do seo so I rank better.

Any miracle stories another (previous) cynic wants to share?

They are invaluable. Why cant you be the presenter telling people "The importance of having an internet presence" it's not always about getting more customers. It can be awareness of your services, getting your name out there, making people listen to what you have to say, becoming a leader in your industry, an influencer, the top local web design service.

Definitely check it out. Get actively involved. Not just a passive networker. Offer people free keyword analysis etc. Make yourself heard at these events and it will pay in the long run.

I agree. Being seen as a resource will definitely help you grow your business as people approach you for advice. Soon, they'll be approaching you for work.

A lot of people overlook networking. They are a great way of really getting to know people in an informal way.

if you know networking, you know business. Find the great places, the great time and the great people, i call them the alpha users, the people that get influence and can spead your idea or give you effective support.

When looking at networking basics, understanding the way a network operates is the first step to understanding routing and switching.

If you're not networking, do this right now:

    1. Get your clothes in order. Get your suits or dresses fitted if they're not already.

    2. If you don't have a good business wardrobe then go somewhere like Nordstrom Rack where you can get high-quality clothes at deep discounts. (If you're already rolling in money, go to Neiman Marcus and buy a few $3,000 hand-made suits that will last a lifetime - I did that between 10-12 years ago and simply have them re-fitted every couple of years.)

    3. Get on Meetup's mailing list for your city and start going to events. Subscribe to your local Business Journal or look for events on their website. Join the Chamber of Commerce if you can afford it.

    4. Buy a good book on business networking like the "Little Black Book of Connections" by Jeff Gitomer and learn how to network.

    5. Always have a ready supply of business cards and be ready to answer the question "what do you do" on a moment's notice. And make it interesting and attractive. Don't say "I do internet marketing for local businesses." Say, "I get your website literally printing money for you."

If you do this right you will get huge profits and all from networking. Believe me, people WANT your offline services, so stop cold calling or looking for the latest "magic key" to get new clients, and get to some networking events and meet people!
