Local map, coupon promo

Hi guys... after been inspired by an awesome thread on here, Bob Ross's giant coupon postcard, I came up with my own take on it.

I'm living in a small, but busy (touristy) town in China.

Bob's concept wasn't really an option, as, while China does offer a direct mailing service... they put all postcards, in envelopes!

So... I had a think about it, and, decided, I'd create a town map, advertising local businesses... but of course, use coupons, which hasn't been done before.

I printed 5,000 A4 maps, folded, and had 2 girls hand them out 6 days a week in a busy part of town.

I also put them all around local businesses, using branded flyer holders... stick em on a counter, and other coupons will just be dumped on em.

Everything was bi lingual... so, the advertisments and coupons were pretty busy.

Needless to say, the first run, wasn't a very big success... but, it's all trial and error.

This time... I've come back with a far superior design... and it's A3!

It still folds down to a regular trifold brochure size.

The thing is, I've only managed to sign up 8 of the 15 spots so far... I still need to chat to more businesses tomorrow, although I'm not sure if I'll make it to 15.

At 8, I can still turn a profit.

I contacted 2 websites, that are relevant to this target market, well the westerners... there's more Chinese tourists here, but a lot of westerners.

I think this could be quite valuable ad space to a site that's already spending cash on google ad words... I'll continue to work this angle and see how I go.

I still think it's a solid idea... but the Chinese don't really get it.. most of my sign ups are western businesses... I'm only charging 500rmb per ad spot... around $80... there's 15 spots.

The western businesses can really see the value in it... and want me to keep going.

Anyway, just thought I'd share...

Cheers, working on a app... this is just a hardcopy. I think a lot of tourists like to have a map in their hand.

A guy here tried the old local magazine thing... didn't really work, the town's not big enough to fill with new content every month... plus, i have people handing my map out, rather than just sitting in hostels of restaruants/bars.

On my second month now, it's quite popular in the town

I'll scale up to the closest city, Guilin next month.

      Here's some pics,

I'm targeting bars restaurants and activities... it's busy season, so the hostels/hotels are full... they don't need much marketing.

When the season slows a bit, I'll approach them.

I'm finding I'm getting much better response from the western businesses.

The Chinese are still way behind when it comes to design and marketing.

It's all about guangxi too (relationship) if they don't know you, it's very hard to cut a deal.

        That is impressive!

I have a habit of living in tourist towns. Not sure why, but I've always lived in one.

I can't help you with the cultural aspect of it, other than to encourage you to stick with it and use any unpaid ad spots left for your own sites/business.

For example, maybe get a site that is a local guide for your town. Use the maps to drive traffic to your site, plus maybe sell touristy stuff on the site. (Think Cafepress type stuff, if that's a practical option.)

          Thanks Shay

I tried a clickbank product last month, "online survery" I promoted it as, "make money while you travel"

Didn't work... there's a rocket chinese course on cb... so, may try that.

I was also thinking of including some local info, like, population, bit of history... makes it a bit more authentic.

I go to print in 3 days...

I'm also meeting one of the towns big shots today... he owns tons of bars and restaurants around town, I emailed him my proposal, and he says he wants to meet up and chat about the map and other stuff.

I think it's a good way to get to get other opportunities... as I'm a web/graphic designer... I'll report back.

Sound like you're on the right track - good luck!

Not sure if it's an option, but can you be an amazon affiliate there? How about ads for books about China? The big, expensive coffee table books? History books? "Tour" books?

Or could you maybe make books like that?

My main biz is a publishing company. If you want any help going that route, let me know and I'd be happy to help.

Almost a year later, thought I'd have an old update.

Ok, had a big update.. but trimmed it, as I would like feedback on a new concept... long story short, I did 2 months, the amount of work I put in, coupled with a few disgruntled Chinese business owners... didn't warrent continuing. The main problems were not enough of a budget to distribute properly, also, some of the coupons were pretty bad, 8% off, and not on holidays!

Anyway, was a good learning experience. I know this can still work, as I get asked all the time, where's this, where's that... when backpackers find out I live here.

I have had it in the back of my mind to revisit for a while... and today, I just found out, a place I worked with, Chinese, is copying my idea, surprised it took this long, most of them can't come up with an original idea themselves.

Anyway, moving on, I want to take this digital... as most people have a smartphone these days.

So, I've been thinking of either an app, or mobile site, I have a town site, which has around 10 visitors a day... not much, but have not really been promoting it.

So, ye, I want to take this away from a hard copy map, and promote it digitally... less overheads in the long run.

              What you guys think?

Also, would be good to track coupons online... I was think of free listings, coupons, and collecting commissions, as the business owners here are a bit cheap... well not really cheap, more like, they'd rather have $10 today, than wait a week and have $100

Anyway, I think this could work, as long as I can track the coupons... commissions etc..

I could blanket the town with posters like this,
