Yeah, so, ummm G'bye GoDaddy hello Name Cheap

So I logged into my GoDaddy account to buy some new domains. It's been a while, so imagine my shock when I noticed that .info names were now $11.99!!

NameCheap.com has them for $3.99, so I'll be purchasing domains with them from now on.

I can guess that many of you probably already knew of this, and I'm just behind the times. Wouldn't be the first time :S.

Anyone know of another provider I can keep in my back pocket for when NameCheap raises prices?

That's crazy - I remember buying them for $0.99 cents at one point in time.

    I know!!!

I just started adding some .info's to my cart and I see namecheap is offering WHOIS Guard for free, too! =D

I always get private registration on my domains, so I'm thrilled. That stuff was usually $7 / domain with GoDaddy.

    Shopping spree!!

Ill be moving all my domains away from Godaddy very soon. They are so expensive with whois guard and their renewal prices they don't even come close to being competitive.

I've got about 30 domains on namecheap and I love them. yeah the free whoisguard is hard to beat too.

I was given 5 domains on godaddy and holy crap that's a disaster to deal with. I've got one domain expiring in 3 days and I can't renew it because it's so confusing trying to get through the payment process without being tricked into buying some other service with their neverending upsells.

I'm trying to pay with paypal and it just loops me around and around. They spam the hell out of my mailbox too. I don't know why anyone would even go with godaddy rather than namecheap.

Thank you for validating my experience Bob! When I had a DNS issue with one of my clients accounts, instead of helping me solve the problem, they tried upselling ME on each service they offer, AFTER explaining to them who I was, and I was contacting them on behalf of my client's account. They then proceeded to force upsell me on premium DNS, "which will solve my issue." Unknowingly, due to my lack of experience with GoDaddy (you wonder why), I proceeded to purchase it with the go ahead from my client. Sure enough, I didn't need the premium DNS, and they would not refund my money for the first months payment! GoDaddy = Bad Business!

Name Cheap all the way! I know there was a thread floating around not that long ago, but GoDaddy has really taken a dump over the past year. Now even when you buy BULK with GoDaddy, and im talking at least 50-100 domains, they won't give you free protection. They used to offer free WhoIs protection for bulk orders, but as of 2 weeks ago, 'they no longer offer that service for free'. 12 dollars for a .com, and an additional 4-7 for protection? I'd much rather save 7 bucks on each one with NameCheap. 100 domains would run you an ADDITIONAL $700! Thats NUTS!

I ordered 5 domains and got to checkout right away!

I didn't know what to do when I wasn't confronted by 3 pages of upsells

I had to call for help!

Ok....I have over 300 Domains on GoDaddy (I used discount codes for $7 ea) many expiring in the next few mos. I've heard that GoDaddy "makes it hard to TRANSFER" to another registrar.

Is there a "problem" transferring to NameCheap? If so, any suggestions on steps to take to make the Transfer from GoDaddy to NameCheap?

      Thanks,

      Don Alm

Hey Don! Yes, GoDaddy does make it hard for you to do just about anything! BUT, the support from NameCheap will get you through it. Contact NameCheap first, and tell them your situation. They will tell you how to make the conatct to GoDaddy, and what to tell them for it to operate as smooth as possible. First off, talk to NameCheap about the transfering fee. I know each domain (.com) are around $10 per domain, BUT, that renews your domain for a year, and also gives you free WhoIs protection. Their transfer process is free, they just make you add the extra year so they will keep you as a client. Though, if they are expiring anyway then I say DO IT! A few cents cheaper than GoDaddy, and free WhoIs protection! and ACTUAL SERVICE!

You are semi right about go daddy starting price but you can always find discount coupons I never pay pay more then 8.99 and I have bought over 1400 domains at godady in the last 2 years.

Yes you have to do a few clicks to transfer a domain but again takes about 4 minutes after you learn the system to transfer.

seems name cheap is slight more expensive if you use discount codes at godaddy as I have not been able to find good steady supply of discount codes for name cheap unless someone knows a site that supplies these daily

They really don't. I think the phrase "Makes it hard" just means that the person didn't quite know how to do it the first time and needed help.

There are 2 sides to a transfer. The gaining registrar and the losing registrar (in this case, Go Daddy). All that needs to happen in the losing registrar account:

        1) Ensure your whois contact details are up to date for the ADMIN contact . If need be, only update email address for admin (ignore other info if it is not up to date; it is often less hassle if you update other info AFTER the transfer).
        2) Unlock the domain
        3) Get the authorization code (some also call this an EPP key).

The gaining registrar initiates the request, technically (a domain transfer is a "pull" and not a push). This is usually done automatically when transfer is purchased. You will then input the auth code into whatever screen the gaining registrar has for that purpose, which is "generally" sufficient to accept a transfer. Sometimes the gaining registrar will send a special code of their own. This is different than the Auth code and is the reason that you updated the admin email with the losing registrar (step 1, above).

There are regulations concerning transfers of a domain that are outside of Go Daddy's (or any registrar's) control: this is a 60 day lock that occurs after change of ownership or new registration. This helps mitigate domain hijacking. But due to misunderstandings of the process, some people play "Blame the registrar" and say that "xyz registrar is locking my domain"... BLEH, we know it's a pain, but these walls are here for your protection

Hope this long-winded (and off-topic) explanation helps.

For what it's worth, my reseller account is through godaddy and I operate as my own "sort of" registrar and hosting company (although still technically through them, and they provide support). I keep my prices cheaper than them Unfortunately I only make pennies on domains lol.

        Thanks,
        -Kevin

I just started with Namecheap and I must say that they are the BEST and CHEAPEST domain registrar!

I have the feeling that GoDaddy will start losing a lot of business with there main competitors gaining their market share. I personally think that NameCheap will be the main company that gains the market share that godaddy starts to lose.

I started registering domains with 1&1. Then I moved to GoDaddy and after that to Namecheap. A couple of months ago I finally returned to GoDaddy because with their coupons etc. no other company I checked beats their registration or renewal prices.

Yes, the numbers on their homepage may look bigger than other companies but there are always coupons for GoDaddy that at the end, it becomes cheaper than others.

Besides, in GoDaddy if you turn off all the upsell type of emails, you only get emails about your expiring domains and important stuff.

I have purchased 31 domains in the last year. All of them from GoDaddy. I didn't pay more than 7.99 for any of them. In fact, I only paid 3.99 for about 75% of them. As said before, it's all about the coupon codes. I usually don't even mess with any of those coupon code sites. I hop on google and search things like "buy domain names" until go daddy pops up under the adsense section. I can agree on GoDaddy hosting being crap but I think their domain registration is great. You have to understand that to an outsider GoDaddy is the end all, be all of domain registration. This means that GoDaddy can charge high prices because many people view them as the safest, and the best option. GoDaddy knows that customers like us are REALLY their bread and butter. That is why they make these discounts so easily available. Heck, if you just look around on some of their websites pages I'm sure you'll come across a discount. Even if you watch their upsells, there are a few things that are more expensive on the first upsell page than on the very last upsell page just before payment. You gotta think like a marketer when you buy from them.

Namecheap is an overall better registrar anyway, so you upgraded.
Even if Namecheap cost more, I'd still suggest them above Godaddy anyday.
Namecheap doesn't try to upsell you with page after page of useless "services" (crap) like Godaddy does.
The domain panel is also much nicer and better organized.

    I see somebody mentioned 1&1...

I would not suggest 1&1 -- lots of billing issues, lots of domain panel problems. They use really lousy in-house systems that look to have been programmed by a monkey with a stick. Even Godaddy isn't that bad, and that's saying something.

Again, stick to Namecheap and DirectNIC if you want quality registrar services.

FYI the cost for most domains on namecheap is 10.69 including free whois.

If you use the coupon this month of BACK2SCHOOL you can get it down to 9.61.

Price is similar to other services but you probably save getting the free whois.

Can't beat the customer service. I've had many chats with their online
agents who have helped with sticky transfers and other matters and
they've been great. They don't try to constantly upsell you services you
