Non-related to you and on retainer. Please provide as much detail as possible - step by step - to help people new to the game.

I got my first client ever on a referral... but I had done some internal work for my family's business (at the time) before that.

However, my fave method of getting clients is cold calling. There is always SOMEONE out there who wants what you have, if you can explain it in simple terms... your job is to find them, and get them to pay you.

Craigslist. Responded to an ad, showed him work I'd done from my full-time job (marketing agency) and he approved my proposal.

I remember my first client. It was dentist. I took $3997 for my services. How I got it?
My wife was looking for good dentist in our town. She cleaned her teeth with that dentist and she liked service. So we called togehter telling how good they are and how we want to help them get more patients. They got excited. I had great time and come home with 4k in my pocket

There is no best method; for me i personally use a combination of all:

    Email: Initial Contact
Video: Presale service (Personalized and recorded on spot based on the specific business)
Phone: Inform about the email sent as well as followups.

Before it took me around 45 mins per client to create everything; I am very selective on the type of leads I contact. But now I outsourced the whole process using same strategies with updated twists.

You need to find your strengths; if you are an extrovert, cold calling first will be the best choice as you can easily connect. But if you are too shy or have a tendency towards being an introvert; try preselling them via email/videos/imchat etc... then it will be easier to connect with them when you meet face to face or via phone.

The aim of marketing is to make selling superfluous. The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well that the product or service fits him and sells itself.....

I was lucky enough to get a client the very first time I picked up the phone - on my first cold call for web design! It really pumped me up to continue making calls, although I did face a bit of reality when I noticed that it's a bit more difficult to find an interested prospect than I originally assumed!

    Cool thread idea.

I get my first client in oDesk.com and the project was press release submission. That client was very helpful. He helped me all the way to complete the project. Though the rate was a bit lower but it was a very important assignment for me. I will always remember him. His name was "Paul".
