Analyzing a client's SEO before making the initial call - what tools do you use?

Hi all - I'm making cold calls for SEO and find myself getting bogged down looking through different keywords, etc. to see how each prospect's doing before I pick up the phone.

What tools do you use to easily get a feel for their rankings and whether they're doing any SEO before you call a prospect?

Thank you!

    1. Getlisted.org might be a decent place to start.
    2. Also, another warrior just shared his tool: http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...f-reports.html
    3. seodigger.com ( be sure not to include the "http://" and the trailing"/" from the url when you enter it in the url/domain field)

Thanks for the suggestions - I'd never seen getlisted.com before. Anyone else?

        Simple, google what they do!
For example, a dog grooming business - search dog grooming.
Do they show up? No you say? Good! Help them out.

Its easy to get lost in keywords and everything. What matters is the reality - are they there or not.

I disagree - I find that many SEO analysis tools will help your company look more professional, credible, and knowledgeable. Plus it will effortlessly show information that will be beneficial in the future of your campaign. Sure, you could do it all manually, but why? Your business should be as efficient as possible.

Spyfu.com - gain perspective of competitors
Compete.com - see how much traffic competitors are getting
Google Keyword Tool - volume of traffic

...and that's really it. That's enough to WOW them. But that's just purely for organic SEO prospects. If it's another type of prospect, I'll use other tools.

Maybe, but don't spend all day on it. Doing "research" can be a horrible time-waster. And before you know it, hey! We're out of time to make calls.

    Guess we'll do that tomorrow.

Oh Jason, I intimately know that black hole of preparing for calls you never make!

Thanks everyone for the feedback. These are exactly the kinds of suggestions I was hoping to get.

  • My buddies, who run a local seo company, told me they use Brightlocal for reports.

I would be careful in qualifying out clients on your own. Why? All the research in the world will not tell you that the guy on page 1 that looks like he's doing well, may be in need of SEO, because his last contract just ended and the last provider gave terrible customer service. Or he paid a one time fee and has slipped 4 spots in the last 2 months. He is already pre-sold, but research shows he doesn't need your help.

I agree with kcom, especially post Panda/Penguin. I just spent an hour on the phone with an attorney yesterday who has about 30 sites. He's doing great on half his keywords and just got tanked on the other half.

I suggested a knowledge graph SEO strategy and he loved it. He followed up with a proposal to me (a proposal to me?, yes) that we do several 8-page sites together over the next few months. All SEO. I never would have guessed this guy needed the help.

Everyone's a prospect, every business can be improved. If you have thousands of numbers to call, you're wasting your time researching each one.

You want to find who knows the internet is serious business and who wants to move forward and get results with you. These people don't care about SEO reports, the majority of them dont want to hear about your seo reports. So you want an easy going general script to determine if they even want to invest in the internet.

You're not going to want to bog them down with SEO information on your first contact. Just get them interested in your services, not SEO services either. Lead generation and customer acquisition services. As I said, EVERY business is a prospect and can grow. Find the ones who know they can grow and actually want to, you do this by talking to them, not looking through rank and link data.
