Cold Calling, How Does it Work For You?

Hi all,

I run a copy writing firm and is targeting local businesses. I was thinking of doing cold calls and have consulted a friend in the marketing agency. He said that in order for cold calls to work, I should email the person first, then call them regarding the email I send (giving me a reason to call them).

Do you think this technique work?

If you are a service based business and you are doing cold calls, how does it work for you?

I would like to learn if it's something I should try or should I try something else.

Its not a cold call, its a warm call.

Investigate the forum for experts and threads in cold calling techniques. Some of the best in the world are present here, both in line of cold calling, warm calling and other contact methods.

I´m not convined, that a cpoy writer should sell hes/her business through calls - but should rather demonstrate strong skills in writing, like in writing opening piches, emails scripts so on.... You get the point !

I have to disagree with all due respect. He can sell his copywriting through cold calls. He just needs to find those that need his services. he also needs to understand how to best package them. For example, copy writing can be good for adding content to websites and/or press releases. Target the right prospects and he will get clients. This service might not be good for the smallest of businesses but may be a match for those businesses that are bigger up to medium sized businesses that do not yet need an in-house copy writer.

If he writes great copy then there are many online businesses that would love to pay for those services.

E-mail then cold call? The only reason to do this is that the e-mail will give you a reason to get busy calling. Most every business owner will delete your e-mail.

    So just call.

A sales letter, on the other hand...displaying some of your work, may set up a call into a warm call.

Set up the call with a letter, or just call. Me? I'd just call.
It may take you a day to get a good lead, but it's better than the fantasy that e-mails to a cold list will produce any results.

As long as you take action you can worry about technique later. When I first starting selling it was for ad space in the local paper (a SMALL local paper).

I had no idea what I was doing and they gave me no training at first. One of the guys that I work with just told me to "pick up the phone and start dialing and not put it down till I had 10 appointments." "You'll figure out the rest as you go along."

Best advice I got there. I was spending all my time trying to figure out the best way to do... only sold 2K worth of space that first month...

So I just went balls out cold calling (about 200 businesses a day) and got up to $60K a month in 3 months. Still not knowing what I doing. That gave me a little breathing room to work on referrals and increasing conversions etc.

Just work on one part at a time. Are you closing on the phone? Probably not so you are trying to set an appointment. So work on that first. Then work on closing better on your first appointments and on up the food chain.

I started a call center with 6-7 guys a couple years ago and the guys that made the most money for me weren't always the best salesmen... they were the ones that were the most prolific and persistent.

Just get out there and do work!

I've had a hard time making cold-calls, but I can say that after making it a huge deal (not necessary) and just doing a few (and I do mean a few) I've had better success than with the many emails I sent out.

For ME...email didn't work. I got 0 responses. I didn't sell or write anything annoying either. I offered to help. I got nothing.

I may have only made a few calls today, but I get it now. It's not that scary and I CAN do it...and I WILL be a success because of it.

Everyone loves the idea of sending a harmless and non-threatening email and getting business from it, and I'm sure that's possible if you do it with scale and lots of testing.

But, for the guy like me trying to get something going it's probably not going to be the savior.

    Not for me anyway.

It is a little scary starting out but after you get to a thousand no's it get pretty easy After that you will actually enjoy it. It's like calling random ATM machines knowing that the next one might payout.

The opposite way is actually better. Cold call the business, try to speak to as many decision makers as possible. For the calls that the DM is not available (which will be many!) get as much info about the dm as possible, like name (good for putting in subject line), best email address to send to, and any other info that may benefit you. With all that info you will be sending a warm email and by adding their name to the subject line they will most likely read it.

    I would:

    1) Get list and call it
    2) Talk to DM, get their email, then set appt to call and discuss info in email
    OR
    2) If you can't get DM, ask person you speak with for the DM's email, send email and include info and tell them you will call them to follow up and discuss.

Blind emailing works for some things, but most people just ignore them or mark them as spam if they don't expect it.

Cold calls are better when you have the leads, and generally, my technique is "sending them an email with a video (offering my business), remember: people respond more pictures/videos/what they can see and hear, rather than notes! 60% of the time, they reply, and then my telemarketer/Account executives need to see them in person and close the sale! roughly, out of 100 leads, u can get 10% to 60%, and mostly, 20% of these 100 leads become my clients!

    hope that advice helps :-)

I don't know how many clients you'll get from calling...

...but I do know exactly how many clients you'll get from NOT calling: zero.

One thing that I know the vast majority of people have not "gotten" yet is this:

You are going to be here tomorrow, next week, next month, next year (unless you die).

The time will pass. Suddenly you'll look up and it will be April again.

In the meantime, will you have used your resources wisely, or will you have played Chicken Little and have nothing to show for this time that has gone by?

You can sell ANYTHING over the phone. It just let's you connect with people in a way like no other.

Here's what I would do if I where you though:

    1. Direct mail campaign to my target audience designed to have them call me & close them over the phone.

    2. Call the people who didn't respond to the DM campaign and try to close them over the phone.
