How Many Niche Markets To target At First?

I'm going back and forth on this one. We first started out trying to get anyone to use our services that we could. Then we shifted to focus just on restaurants and retails outlets.

Now we are thinking of narrowing down even further to just focus on restaurants.

What do you guys and gals think? Is it better to start out focusing in on one niche? Or do you just go for everyone in town?

We are offering SMS, websites, mobile sites and reputation management services.

In starting out, you definitely want to avoid targeting "niches".. I mean, all companies pay out the same currency right? So what does it matter?

You want to spread your net as wide as you possibly can in these early stages.

To provide your company with a strong enough foundation, you really do need a strong flow of Leads from anywhere you can get them from.

Once you build up working relationships with different businesses and you find that it's easier to make money by serving a specific "niche" THEN you can streamline your approach and use more targeted tactics.

ummm, perhaps with a billion dollar budget that's possible.

FOR SURE niche market. The powerful thing about niching is
you can get specific in your marketing. You can relate to the
business much better if everything you reference has to do with
      THEIR type of business.

NOTHING matters more to a prospect than relevance

/\ I'm not sure if thats the best approach tbo.

This guy is new, he doesn't know ANYTHING about the niches he is targeting. The business owners will figure this out, and probably give him a hard time.

I think you should at least try learning about 2-3 select niches. Study their competitors, what they're doing, then start going into these businesses. If you actually know something about the industry, it builds value. If you don't know anything about any of these industries, and target everyone, to me that lowers value. I just can't see how you're going to sell that.

You need some form of credibility imo.

When I got into webdesign specifically I learned A LOT about the home improvement industry. So that was who I targeted. Had I walked into a diner or something, I would have felt so out of my element. "Hey I'm new, and I don't know a thing about diners... can I help you with your marketing?"

Whether you say that or not, it will be communicated one way or another. So I don't see how broad targeting can be useful. To each his own I guess.

in my opinion firstly you choose a specific niche and later when u see that u can go at other niches you take ur chance and do it.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I think I am going to target restaurants to start with our services. There are lots of restaurants in our area as we are a tourist region, so the competition among them is high.

I'm thinking I can use that to my advantage.

If anyone has time to check out my site it is in construction phase at lmldemo.localmobilelaunch.com. I'd appreciate any feedback on it.

    What is you niche?

If you are local your USP is you are local.

If you only work with resturants your USP is you only work with resturants and never for competing resturants. "I focus on resturants. I know the industry. I've helped local pizza places just like Mama Jean's dominate in their market. And don't worry you won't see me working with Jonny's Pizza on 5th. I only work with one pizza parlor in each market. You get 100% of my attention, expertise, and skill making sure when people think pizza they find Mama Jean's."

Remember if you do local you have to offer services that will not create a conflict of interest. You can't do SEO for two pizza place for example. But you can offer fan pages to 5 pizza places. But you should only actively be managing one. Think about it that way.

Now with any USP you can start by combining it with local to get it going. Close multuiple resturants that don't directly compete. Choose the next market 50 opr 100 miles away and repeat, repeat, repeat.

I didn't think of this Aaron. Thanks. So I can say I only work with one type of restaurant in my town. So, only one pizza place, one mexican place, one thai place, etc. Say this for my SMS and SEO campaigns.

Then for websites, mobile sites, fan pages I can work with all of them.

Thanks for that and that is a good thing to put right on the home page right.

I'm not sure you need to spell it out on the home page but it needs to be part of your pitch.

find one niche that suite your product..make it a niche that you understand and can speak the lingo with the business owners. its all about creating a relationship and not being seen as a salesperson..If you can speak with a potential client like yo have been in their shoes, you are a huge step ahead of the rest..
