I'm getting into the web design game but is this a good idea??

Instead of taking any client that comes my way in any type of business I'm thinking about targeting a certain niche. I feel that when you target a niche that you know a lot about the website you are designing will come out a lot better.

I am a contractor electrician/handyman by day so I want to focus on the trades/service industry. But I also want to focus on the hotel and restaurant/pizza shops because I worked in customer service for many years also.

Is it bad to focus on certain niches and turn down certain clients? I read a lot about people going after lawyers because the have "the big bucks" but I wouldn't know the type of content to put on those type of sites.

It all comes down to what I go through working in the trades...many tradesmen that specialize in a trade hate on the handymen that don't specialize and handymen often do things wrong.

I don't want to be a webdesign "handyman" and take on work from clients in fields I don't know much about such as lawyers and others.

If I design websites for the trades I know exactly what type of content to put on those sites and how it should look. I know what needs to be said to draw in more business because I am in this business.

Is this a good plan? or am I leaving a lot of money on the table by not catering to everyone who wants a website?

I read about it being hard enough to find clients and if I'm making the pool smaller would it be even harder? Or will it be easier to gain clients being a specialist in some?

Personally I think the idea is good, you can focus your marketing on the niches you want to target.

However if someone outside your niche stumbles across one of your adverts then I probably wouldn't turn them away. You can look at some of their competitor sites to see what is a recurring feature, and if you really are struggling for content you can ask them for it. If they say no, it doesn't matter, you were going to turn them away anyway!

If I was a tradesman and I received two calls, one from a web design firm and one from a web design firm specialising in my niche, then I would definitely go with the second one. So if that is the market you wish to target, then I say go for it.

People who target all markets usually start out doing it for local businesses. So I suppose if you just targetted a smaller niche you could do it for a wider range of locations to expand your pool that way.

    Good luck

    It's a good plan.

Have a look at what this guy does with building websites just for Restaurants:

I know he does really well and people see him as the expert.

Design what you are good at. Don't turn away other businesses, I would outsource the work.

It's more important to focus on the needs of the client than what you are good at.

You're on the right track. Now you need to find out what niches are most profitable for you.

Knowing the lingo for a niche is very powerful. It sets you apart from anyone else calling about what you offer, and helps give you instant credibility.

Our company's website and the vast majority in the RV industry were made by RV niche specific web services companies. Focusing on a niche is always a good idea if you know how to bring value to that niche.
