Follow up after emailing mock up?

In the last 4-5 days I sent two mockups to two businesses, one mobile and one a regular website. I originally cold called these businesses.

I was expecting calls but haven't received any. Now that was probably a stupid assumption on my part. I'll call them both tomorrow.

For next time, my question is when would you make a follow up call... the same day you send the mockup or the 2nd or 3rd day?

I agree. No mockups. I never send a mockup unless I already have a contract with them. I have been building sites for 16 years and it's never been an issue. I have a portfolio of sample work. That's all they need.

Do you mind explaining how sending a mockup prevents future problems?

I didn't say sending one prevents future problems, I said NOT sending one will prevent it.

1.) You're investing time into something you aren't being paid for yet.
2.) You're giving them an easy out and they can say they don't like it
3.) A mockup is not what an actual site would be like, it is irrelevant, it's just a psd usually.
        4.) You lose leverage.

It's like they're asking for a free trial, just to cancel after the trial is over with. If someone asks for a mockup before they pull the trigger, then cut them off.. Usually they'd be a problem.

Of course, if you're desperate for the sale or think it'll be worth it, then go for it. I personally don't waste time with it. I have enough projects lined up that I'm not going to waste my team's time on a mockup for a potential client... there are thousands of potential clients out there that DON'T need a mockup.

Have you tried sending a video? These are much more effective than image-based mock-ups. I speak from experience.

Both methods are a time waste. Sucking out the time out of your day. You guys just want to feel more comfortable with a cold contact, that's all. It's not efficient, but to each his/her own.

How about just saying NO. Sending any info is just a waste of time.

Close em... or fold em ...

      1 call.

      end of story.

I'm honestly a bit split on the issue. I submitted a proposal for a $20,00 site a couple days ago. The company is floored with it and loves my portfolio. The issue is every other firm that has bid is going in at no more than $6,000. Here's the e-mail I got just now:

    Maksym,
One of the other companies has called and they are putting together a sample home page of ***** for the team to look at. The guys want to look at that before deciding which way to go. It will be a couple of days before we get it. If you would like, you could certainly do the same. Anyway, it will be a couple of days. Let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks,
    ****

I just commissioned by designer to create a jaw dropping mock-up which should be ready in a few hours. My thoughts on the matter are that I don't want the client getting "shiny object syndrome" and going with a less qualified firm just because they provided a mockup with their logo on it. So I'll submit a mock-up to rival them...and appeal to the emotional ego side of the decision makers.

Not sure how desperate you are for the business. Either you have to find a way to negotiate it up to closer to what you're quoting, or you have to let this unsuitable opportunity go. It's just life, and there's always others who are happy to fulfill the assignment at the price point they quoted.

Terribly. I missed the crucial sign that they're broke when he said "Money isn't an issue" early on. They loved the mockup but can't even afford $1,000.

        On to the next one.
