Advantages of Visiting Businesses vs Sending Letters

I am ready to launch a campaign, and I will basically be cold-visiting businesses that don't have a website, asking for the owner/manager and leaving a sales letter explaining my services (Basically a free website if they sign-up for HostGator through me), or simply leaving the letter with an employee if the owner is not available.

In your experience, what kind of realistic hit rates should I expect if I visited about 150 in one week?

Also, is there an advantage to simply mailing the sales letters, since it allows me to target more businesses at once even if the conversion rate is lower?
