Cold calling is the best NO direct mail NO advertising !!

There seems to be so many arguments out and about about which method of marketing is the best.
You get the cold callers, then the people who swear by direct mail, all trying to convince readers which is better.

Generally someone will say "I spent $2000 on PPC and I got nothing from it so it does not work" OR " I tried cold calling like 10 people and they said no so it doesn't work".

NO it does work. " I failed, so you will too"

All these things need to be learned.

Cold calling: If you are a new business, who has no clients, who has no money THIS is a sure fire way to get clients.
It does work. If you need help with scripts, just ask on this forum. Call, keep a record, and you WILL get work. End of story. 5 calls does not count. Judge only after your first 100-200 calls.
Don't even ask "does it work?" , "i don't like getting calls, so therefore i don't think it will work". It does work. End of story. If you aren't getting results ask for advice.

Direct Mail: You will need to have researched extensively who your target market is and for maximum bang for your buck HIRE a great copy writer to get that wording correct. It is an art that with correct wording WILL make a difference.

Advertising: Generally, it does not matter where you advertise, be it CL, the newspaper, online etc. It is similar to direct mail as in your message must "speak" to your potential clients. And for it to "speak" you again must know your market. The wording will also make a difference.
Knowing what your clients like, where they hang out, what they read etc etc will help you determine where the best place to advertise is. Advertising is expensive but can bring in awesome results when you figure the basics out first.

And of course there are a heap more like optin pages, newsletters, social media, and even more ways to tie them all together for 1 common goal.

Hi stopgo, thanks for the post. Welcome to the forum. I wish every new arrival's posts had the quality of this one.

I want to point out that, for example, a) even though I'm a sales trainer, I'm also a copywriter and I use every kind of marketing I can get my hands on; and b)

The use of every single one of these methods is a skill, a learnable skill, that you are not going to become an expert in overnight. Even with expert help pointing you in the right direction.

I trained kung fu for 4 years 4 or 5 nights a week and let me tell ya, just because my instructor showed me how to do a technique didn't mean I was gonna just leap into the air and kick the heavy bag the way he did. Not right away. Not for the first week. Not for the first month. Nope. I was going to get better, yes, and my technique would improve over time. It might take six months to a year until it was down pat, a quick reaction, something I could just do and not think about.

Same thing here, with sales & marketing.

    Are you committed?

I don't think most people are.

What if, after a week of training a new technique, I threw up my hands and screamed like a baby to my instructor, "That's IT! I'll NEVER be good at this! I QUIT!"

Yeah, sounds pretty silly, doesn't it? But that's what newbie after newbie does. Don't be like them. Stick to it. Be in for the long haul. It takes time to get good at things.

You have to be willing to begin badly. People have a real problem with this. I know I did: when I was a kid, I thought all those other kids who could run and play soccer were simply naturally gifted. They'd run around me and I'd think, well I could never do that. This kid was born that way. Just natural.

    WRONG!

They played a heck of a lot more soccer than I did.

That's what my martial arts training taught me, and it's too bad I had to wait until I was in my early 20s to learn that lesson. But I've taken it with me to work and everywhere else ever since.

Could be a script. What do I say to this new niche of prospects? At this point, I'll start with my best guess and improve with modifications as I go. You find out what kinds of problems people are actually struggling with over time by talking to them. But some people don't want to spend that time. They want the perfect script right at the start, or they're not going to pick up the phone. Can you see how silly that is?

Be willing to begin badly. Don't beat yourself up about it. Know that with commitment and coaching you can improve. Stick to it--after all, unless you die, the time will pass. It will be six months, a year, two years from now, in the blink of an eye. Will you have developed a skill? Or will you have a string of "I Gave Up"s? Your choice. Every day.

What if, instead of this lame stuff, you posted a meaningful, thoughtful paragraph that made other people think a little?

      Jason,
First off, thank you for all the "hard won" free stuff you post here.

I'm an old sales guy (or just an old guy) compared to most here.
I've had decades of experience knockin' doors and hitting the phones
for others and for my own businesses. I wish to heck someone would
have shown me the methods that you have outlined on this forum when
I was just starting. It would have knocked years off of my learning curve.

More importantly, and this is the critical part that a lot of people
fail to grasp - it would have pushed me well ahead of where I am today.

Old guy - over & out.

I think you are being unfair. "Nice post" covers alot of ground.
Maybe the poster started off with a 900 word essay that praised your post. I imagine it had drama, excitement, pathos....perhaps even erotica.
And then the hours were spent editing. With perspiration on his brow, Histopathlab tried to pare this work of art down to it's bare essence.

Draft after draft were rejected. Eventually a consultant said to him (at $500 a minute), "Mr. Histograph, I believe we have arrived at the beauty of simplicty, and the depth of feeling you were striving for."

And the telegram arrived with this cryptic message from the millionaire consultant. It read "Say 'Nice post'. It will impress everyone with your civility, and men will be in awe of your powers of brevity".

And so I say to you all "Very nice post"!

( I put the "very" in there for copyright reasons)
