Lessons From A 10 Year Old

So, some day last week (Wednesday maybe?) a little 10 year old girl came to my door selling the Entertainment Book.
For those that don't know, it is a thick book filled with coupons to local places. Like fast food restaurants, finer dining restaurants, places for entertainment, sports, golf, travel, retail shops, local services like the movie store, auto change, paint, etc. and car washes.
So when this little girl came she asked if I wanted a book.
I said, "I have to order one right?"
She said "Yes".
I said, "And they're only $20?"
She says, "No actually, they are $30 now."
I said, "Okay, well I don't have any cash on me, can I come see you when I do"
She said, "Well, you can write a check"
I said, "I don't have checks, sorry. I will tell my wife and have her go see you". Apparently this girl lives down the street.

Well, I forgot all about this little girl and her book.
Today, guess who knocks on my door?

She says, "Hey, my mom said I can sell you this book (it was her sample, still new),
I said, "Oh sorry, I forgot all about the book. I was going to send my wife to see you but forgot. And all I have are $50's right now."
She says, "Well, you can write a check"
I said, "Sorry I don't have checks remember"
She says, " I will go home and get you a $20"

Then she left. No chance for an objection.
She came back less than 10 minutes later panting from riding her bike so fast.
We exchanged the cash and book, and se left.

So, the lesson.
Think about her follow-up. I completely forgot about her.
She showed back up, offered me the book again, and this time I didn't have to order it.
No cash... ok, I will close on checks.
Not exact change, no problem. Your money is still good here.

Are you making it easy for people to do business with you?
If not, it's costing you sales.

Boyscouts and Girlscouts never cease to amaze me. They posses one thing that many people here lack.... The guts to ask for the sale

Persistence is the key. I agree that follow ups are important in business, one should not rely in leads to contact you. You need to approach them first and if that does not go well, follow up.

You know what else rocks about these little sales warriors?

They sure don't make a heck of a lot of small talk.

Most times, they just remain on target with asking for the sale and they never appear to take no's personally. It's usually their parents who're standing nearby that mention the please and thank yous.

We can all definitely take a page from their book.

    Nice share.

Great story,But you really didn't buy the book. You "bought" the little girl.

You bought the way that she sold her self to you. The way she approached you, the way she did the follow up, the way she sold you the book.

This little girl is a great seller and only 10 years old.

Great post, there's so much we can learn from them for sure. They sure are incredibly persistent.

I think there's a good lesson in here that persistence doesn't always mean pestering. Persistence often just just means you're making it convenient and easy like you said. We're busy, we forget to do things or don't want to make the extra effort to do them, so it's the ones who are persistent to often get the deal.

I've closed many deals from people who I pitched years ago and have continued to revisit them every few months or every year. Then one time they'll suddenly want to do business and appreciate the fact that I've been checked in with them regularly.

That is so awesome that someone so young has the gall to do this. The irony is that she has probably seen so much rejection in her young life. I wonder what her train of thought was throughout the sales process. I wonder what kind of parents does she have for models. Are they both entrepreneurs? Maybe their resilience rubbed off on the girl.

As much as some may want to deny it, following up ALWAYS increases the odds of actually making money. Like in this scenario, one doesn't neccessarily have to hate your product....it could be as simple as forgetting the product.
