When and why would you use a local photocopy shop

Other than trade shows or having to print physical documents (when you don't have a printer), I'm running out of reasons of why you would go there. It would be great to hear some ideas.

  • Not quite sure of the context of the question.
    But how about sneaking a peek at the clients that are there printing out their own stuff. Could be a good way to land a client or two.

      Thanks for your tip. I have thought of 7 different customer demographics already. Just not sure if I have exhausted the possibilities yet, given the tablet and smartphones are further killing this market.

        Have you heard of observation?

        You certainly have a local photocopy shop within a 15-minute drive of you. Just go there and watch who goes up to the counter. The one I go to is REALLY busy with walk-in traffic, both consumers doing wedding invitations and local businesses. They do specialized things that can't be done on the average office copier.

          Um...yes I did observe when I visited a photocopy shop 2 weeks ago. It is really busy with walk-in traffic, and I've made my fair share of observations. But I didn't feel the demographics I've pulled out was enough. Hence I asked here for additional suggestions.

    Local print shops will always be around. They've taken a beating because of online printing but there's still a huge need for printing. Most photocopy shops do more than just make copies.

    Like others said, there's wedding invitations. Stag parties, birthday parties, company calendars, business cards, brochures, flyers, labels, yard signs, etc.

    I would not dwell too much on getting clients or prospects from a photocopy shops.. I would advice going to a graphic designer and bargain a commission deal with him.

    I am currently in a jv with 20 graphic designers..All they got to do is to refer their clients to me; and I do the rest. Each deal I close; they get a %. Easy money for them and easy leads for me.

    U need to keep in mind the power of referral also. A referral from a graphic designer compared to a photocopy shop is something you should not even think of comparing.

    Nevertheless if you would like to go this way;

    1. First identify the type of people (corporate, medium biz, own proprietor)
    2. Identify what they are printing (flyers, brochures, pamphlets)
    3. Identify the amount they are printing (the more the better)
    4. Create your own portfolio by incorporating these above variables that you think consist of the largest proportions of the clientele of that photocopy shop.
    5. Print a brochure of your service at that photocopy shop and try to strike a conversation with the owner and close a commission based deal.
    6. Request to give all the clients (based on specific criteria u put) a brochure of yours) or refer directly.
    7. Each deal you close; he received a percentage out of it.
