Directory or "Yellow Pages" type sites? Does anyone here make money with them?

So glad you posted this, I'm curious too. My boyfriend and I have a web design business, but we were considering making a directory site for the next city over from us as a way to bring in some cash on the side. I think that idea got put on the back burner, but I could definitely see that a directory could bring in some extra cash.

I would be very careful of taking the advice from someone who can't pay his hosting bills.

Now it's no longer suspended, but the site has been suspended for so many months. Only when someone like me calls him out, then he paid the bills. He is a suspect IMO.

You can do this, but make sure you don't make it an exact domain. Google's new update can penalize you for that.

I wonder about that too. Like how does the new update factor into the directory sites. I know a friend of mine was just about to go live with her directory site however she said she heard there was another update on google coming so she wanted to wait. Let me tell you I think that was the best thing she could have done because now she is trying to figure out what exactly happened because some of her sites got delisted or they dropped in rankings.

Google booted off directories and now days I get more "Please remove my link" requests than paying clients.

With Panda and Penguin updates - Directories are kind of on the back foot now.

if you can call and get clients it is a different story.

If you have to depend on the clients to submit - I am for sure it is not going to work well.

Hmm..so you think a user-submit directory wouldn't be too profitable? I would think that to even get businesses to WANT to be on your page that your directory would have to rank high on the first page, so that in itself is another factor to consider.
