With wordpress and other cms platforms, is it necessary to know html anymore?

I've learnt a little html. What I want to know is weather it's critical to know it anymore. With the explosion of wordpress and other website construction platforms appearing everyday, surley html is becoming obsolete. What do you think.

There are still plenty of HTML elements being used in Wordpress or wherever. Knowing at least the basics is a huge asset in this business.

I agree with Greg - understanding the basics of HTML and CSS is a huge asset. It's true you can set up a website without having either of those skills, but knowing the basics enables you to fix little problems or make extra little tweaks to your site to give it some individuality and raise it above the crowd.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

I recommend learning as you go along. Trying to read everything and understand it hasn't been the best approach for me. I learned to just Google the issues I have and learn how to change things up when I needed them. Once you learn one thing, it might connect to another and before you know it you've learned a ton of new skills and ways to change up code. So you do not need to know HTML or CSS but it can be helpful depending on what you plan on doing. But in no way is HTML becoming obsolete.

Definitely yes. Because even though I use Wordpress I had learnt HTML, PHP and other programming languages.

This knowledge helped me a lot because I wanted to make changes to themes which I had bought and as I know the code & other snippets it was very easy for me to handle my own code customizations.

It is always advantage to have HTML knowledge as you can do few changes yourself in the files directly. But it is not at all compulsory to have know HTML

Wordpress IS HTML, just with a friendly user interface.

HTML offers flexibility with design, Wordpress doesn't IF you don't know the HTML behind it.

It's not necessarily that HTML is obsolete, it's just that if you plan to outsource, Wordpress would probably be a better outlet. Most outsourcers will welcome it (whether they do SEO, Google+, Site Management)

Yes you need to know a little html but you can Google it as and when you need it. There's nearly always an easy solution as html is so old now. You'll need to know a little CSS too. Depends how much you want to modify the themes though. Also possibly php. Again depends on how far you want to go. Hope this helps

Yes, you should know HTML, CSS and PHP (basics at least) if you want to be able to do something decent. Of course, if you have money, you can outsource everything

A lot of people is using Optimizepress for example. It's great service for sure, but the biggest problem is that it's all over the web. That's bad.

Also, if you know how to build sites (or how to customize themes), you can make good money. And it's just cool to be able to actually create what you have in your mind

I'll have to agree with most that say it couldn't hurt to know the basics, especially if you enjoy playing with code like that.

If you only have a few hours a week to learn one new skill that can have the largest impact on your business, I'd say skip it - use Wordpress and spend your time learning proper marketing skills and how to write copy that sells your products and services.

    Cheers,

    Steve
