Starting some Offline cold calling. Payment questions?

The wife and I are starting some offline cold calling in our area. My question is this.. When a client decides to purchase, I would imagine it would go a lot farther in terms of trust if I had a paypal setup in a company name.

Right now, I just have a personal. Is that sufficient for my first sale, or do I set up another paypal?

If I set up another one, is it a merchant account, or a regular account?

We do what you do, and use my personal account that I had for YEARS. Our invoices say our business name though. Keep what you have, you can make a business account if you want to, but it's not necessary, and will actually allow paypal to charge you more. You get the same protection with your personal account that you do with a business one for services.

I hit enter before finishing. On your invoices on paypal, you can put anything you want to for your business name. You will be surprised how many people have paypal accounts in their personal name but use them for business. You will not be alone.

Will a personal account allow you to personalise your invoices / checkout with a logo?

I've turned my account into a business one the second it was verified so I can't remember. The benefit is the ability to create checkout buttons and allow recurring payments. I don't know what you're selling but recurring income is always a good thing :-)

Yes, my personal account has my logo on it. We send out our own invoices that vary depending on the job, so recurring payments happen, but not usually at the same amount.

I did business as myself for 10+ years and had no problems.

The quality of your questions and the work you do will give you the credibility you're worried about. So don't worry about it. Get on with getting clients!

I agree with Jason on this. Have done the same for more than 10 years and at least 6 years as a consultant. The idea is to present yourselves as independent consultants the keyword being independent. After that, deliver during the call in terms of the way you share your expertise etc and the sale'll be in the bag, whether you have a business name or not.

Having said that, I am now after 6 years moving into the business name and image phase simply because my business is growing really fast and there is a need to be and present a corporate structure for financial and legal benefits.

Bottom line don't worry about it starting out. But perhaps plan for it if you intend to grow past the basic consulting/service provider/freelancer level.

      Cheers

Are you allowed to setup recurring billing on a personal account?

Does the client need to have a PayPal account? (not all business will want one)

I have no idea on the recurring payment, we don't have a need for that feature, like I said, we send out our own invoices weekly or monthly that vary in amounts.

As for the client needing an account, I've found that those that don't have one or have a problem setting one up are not usually people we want to deal with, as it's not hard to set up. MOST businesses or people have one.

To answer the question, no, on a personal account, you cannot receive payments from those that don't have a paypal. With a business account you can accept them if you check the button to allow it. I believe that interferes with your paypal protection though.

No, even on the base level merchant account with Paypal you cannot set up recurring billing. Unfortunately!

<Does the client need to have a PayPal account? (not all business will want one)>

Yes, they will if you just use a personal paypal account. I'd suggest going with the merchant account, the basic version, and just manually send out your invoices on the 1st of the month. It's super quick and easy. You just hit "request money" tab, then click on their last invoice and hit "copy". Then hit "send". Good to go.

We monthly invoice tons of clients, and I can tell you it takes about 20 minutes, and only once a month. Not bad. Worth it. Good luck!

You can choose to pay a set monthly fee which will allow you to take recurring payments through Paypal.

I use a personal account too. With a persona account, you can't set them up for automatic recurring payments, so you have to invoice them every month. You can, however, associate your business email address with your personal account if they are sending it through their own PayPal and you want to give that more professional look.

You don't need a PayPal account to pay. A business owner can just use a credit or debit card.
