I bought Arrons WSO about SMS Marketing which included some videos and a script.

I've made about 10 calls and no one really seems to want to hear anything. I had a guy request that I fax him info, and I have but.. eh.

Is cold calling to sell SMS marketing services still working for some?

I see mom and pop places ALLLL OVER that would benefit with a sign or flyer out front telling people to text this to that # to get so much off your next meal, etc.

I'm almost considering making some nice flyers showing we I can offer for them in terms of SMS and walking it into each store. But at a restaurant, that can be awkward.

You're average local resturant/bar isn't going to have a clue how SMS will benefit them.

You should cold walk and be ready to ask questions to find out their needs and present how you and SMS marketing can help those needs.

"Lately we only seem to be busy on Friday nights"

"I understand that. I eat out myself a lot on friday nights. Seems like a lot of us forget about places the rest of the week. That's why I wanted to visit local resturant owners like yourself and sit down and explain how having a VIP mobile club would help them.

I saw your specials when i came in and that is a great deal on _______. Of course had I not stopped in today I wouldn't have known that. Let me explain how we can send messages right to your customers to get them thinking about you on Tues or Wed and not just friday night."

I agree. My boyfriend and I are going to approach local venues (our town pop. is less than 1,000) with a report already made to demonstrate HOW we are going to get them results. Since they are just local "mom and pop" places, your best bet would be to see them in person.

So far, cold calling and setting a face to face appointment has worked best for me.

To get this kickstarted, why not do negotiate a free trial to see if this works for them. If it does, you then go to the next restaurant and tell them "xyz restaurant" is using your services and getting extra business.

Nothing motivates these guys more than having one over on the competition.

I'll hold my hands up and say that I've never tried marketing sms services. Most restaurant owners understand classified ads, leaflet drops (you know the traditional stuff). Trying to educate these guys in a new system over the phone is going to be extremely hard and will probably blow your confidence a little with the multiple rejections you'll get.

Why not take the little lady out and and start networking on the side (preferably after the meal). That way, you would have at least got your foot through the door and the business owner will be a little more responsive to what's on offer?

I agree with the idea of letting one try it for free, and brag about it.
You could also ask them, since they are getting benefit of the free trial, to spread the word in return.

Get a postcard printed at Vistaprint with some stats and your contact info on it. Then try and think of people who you might know that are in some way connected to businesses that would benefit from sms services.

Or if you have former clients (from web design, graphic design, etc.) approach them first since you would already have a working relationship with them.

    Good Luck!

    Hey DesertSand,

Actually walk in and visit with phone in hand.

Setup a mock sms campaign and text your "keyword" to the shortcode while you are standing there talking to the business owner.

Better yet, let them do it so they see in real time how it works!

If they see it, they might get it!

Telling our customers of clients about our product and services through sms is easy and cheap thing. It is beneficial because due to this distribution of information is very easy and we can communicate with each other at any time through sms. For this no costly system of instruments are needed.

You can set an appointment an hour with business owners. Then when you go in, they've already shown interest so assume they want it. Have them grab a menu, ask what on their menu has a low food cost. Ok. great, that'll be your promotion. Then have a piece of paper that looks professional with keyword options. Next, ask them what 2 keywords they like to match the restaurant. Now, pick one of two keywords and say, "for SMS marketing this one will work best because yada yada yada yada. Then ask how many covers they have each month. Based on that number give them an earnings potential. That's all they care about. If they TRUST you and your telling them the POTENTIAL is of greater value then the price by a nice margin, you'll have the sale every time

When cold calling fail, direct mail is another option that you can consider.

As Jason touched on...10-20 calls is not cold calling fail. It's a failure on your commitment. Cold calling fail doesn't happen unless you don't know what you're doing.

      1. Set up a keyword for them.
      2. Build a custom flyer (doesn't have to be fancy) telling them what all they can send out on a text message.
      3. On the flyer include their keyword and say something like "see how our service can benefit your business, text KEYWORD to XXXXX.
      4. Make sure that the reply they get says something like "this is how your customers will see your messages when they join your VIP text club".
      5. Offer a free trial of the service & offer to provide them with a flyer telling their customers about the text club.

There are a lot more things you can do, but this is a good way to peak their interest.

      Best of luck,
      Roddy

Well as you may know now, 10 calls or 20 calls is not enough. Come back after you've made 200.

I don't know the "Arron" you're referring to, so I can't speak about the script.

What Aaron Doud, who I've been reading posts from since I've been on here, says is correct, though. People don't care about your technology. They don't want features and benefits. They want a problem solved.

"This place is dead Tuesday and Wednesday."

"No kiddin'. You don't have a regular clientele, do you?" (negative reversal, for those in the know)

"Well of course we do! Some Thursdays are good, and every Friday and Saturday the same people pack this place!"

"Ooohh. Have you ever heard that there's a way to stay in contact with those people throughout the rest of the week? If you could let them know about specials happening TONIGHT, do you think they might come down?"

"Hmm. I guess so. Tell me more."

Move off the solution. Don't talk about SMS marketing until the end of the conversation...after you've gotten the prospect to acknowledge that they have a problem you can solve (or symptoms of a problem your solution can help fix).

Go and have a look at this post, and John's forum while you're at it. A quick modification will get it where you need it.

If you feel awkard promoting this product, then this may not be the best idea. Period. If you don't confidence in it, why bother? There are plenty of other ways.

      I compliment your efforts!

Make sure to do your research beforehand, if they aren't already involved in email and social media marketing it is going to be tough to get your foot in the door.

      1. If they are doing email marketing - question them about their open rates, and then bring up SMS open rates and ask if they would like to explore that channel.

      2. Pitch SMS, but if the prospect is having difficulty grasping the concept, pitch SMS to drive subscribers to other channels - ex. Text to Join an email list, text for a link to like us on facebook.

msg me if you want to chat more about this, and good luck!

No offense... While I think some of those features are really nice...
I think everything going to apps is complete BS

There is no way in he!! that I would have an app on my phone for every place I eat at.
There would waaayyy too many apps.

Unless, there is an app that holds apps. Meaning, I can download the main app. Then from inside that, add different restaurants I eat at. Without having to download every app.
Maybe a web based app. Where it takes me to a portal that has my apps that I can manage. I don't want to eat up the storage on my phone with a ton of apps.

        You've just described the internet.

Seriously tho, I dont have ANY apps for any companies or places I eat. That's dumb. I wouldn't even download it if they said they had one. I know I would never use it.

A mobile optimized website on the other hand, that is much more useful and practical.

When I cold call I walk in with my presentation in a folder and explain to them exactly how this will INCREASE THEIR INCOME. Every business owner is only interested in 2 things (initially):
    1. How much is it?
    2. What's my return?
Answer these questions quick and you have more chance of a sale.
    hope this helps
