Hi guys,
as some of you know I have been struggling for a long time (prob 2 months) to find a good business name for my offline business..

I think I have found it - but I would love some feedback please!

My idea is "caged Lion Marketing"

Any feedback?

Thanks!
Dave

My goal is to help local businesses establish an online presence - if they have already then I aim to help with Google Places, Online management, SEO etc...

Generally help local businesses gain more customers!

No exit plan... It's do or die for me.

Image I want to convey is someone professional and capable

I'm sorry. What was your goal for starting the business?
Not what services do you plan on selling?

    You need an exit plan.

Do you feel the name Caged Lion Marketing conveys that message?
    Professional and capable?

My goal is to establish myself as a good marketer who helps businesses get ahead... and to get them seen above their competitors - and ultimately to make a living from the internet skills I have learned.

I like the name obviously.. but there are more experienced people in this arena than me here which is why I am looking for feedback

    I don't know why...but I don't like it.

I get the image of a tired, old lion behind a cage in a zoo. What is the image you're going for? That your work is a wild beast who needs to be behind bars or else you'll attack?

Maybe something else with the word Lion, if you're set on that, but caged lion just sounds a bit depressing, to be honest.

hmmm..ok but I was thinking along the lines of the expression "like a caged lion" meaning pent up energy and aggression...

Secretary: 'Oh there was a call earlier from Caged Lion Marketing'

      Me: Hmmm.

Just use your name and be done with it. Saatchi did ok.

    Right, I understand that.

But is that really the vibe you want to be sending out to potential customers? That you are just a ball of pent up energy and aggression?? Maybe if you're a criminal lawyer or a UFC fighter or something.

But if I was looking for a marketer, I would look for keywords like creative, flexible, dedicated, etc. Aggression would not be high on my list of desired traits.

Think along the lines of action, what action are you promoting to your clients?

The caged lion does not project a great image.

I would drop the Caged Lion...the marketing can obviously stay.

If you MUST, work the caged lion into a logo or your tagline or even in your about section.

I say give some more thought to it

  • Name your business whatever you want..... But be less concerned about "your" brand and more concerned with developing your value added services. As you increase your services value, your personal brand will also continue to increase.

You say you've been struggling for months with the name?? What do your current customers call you then? Would you be causing them confusion if you ever changed it.

I think the name is very important. It's good that you gave it time. In many cases the first contact a potential client has with your business will be your name. You certainly cannot leave it to chance to see if is it good enough.

When Toyota began with the creation of the Lexus brand, they hired consulting firm Lippincott & Margulies to develop a list of 219 prospective names.

Well, most of us can not afford that, but you can visit the sites of companies in search of inspiration, and then connect the parts of different names, you know, to experiment a little, see what it's like... until you get to some that will sound like customers can connect your company with sense of power and success.

Not sure if you have started taking on clients already but don't get hung up on the name. Focus on building the business, thats the important part. While I'm speaking without knowledge of your current situation, I have seen people fixate on small details that just aren't important in the greater scheme of things. They should be focusing on building a business. I've been there too and done similar stuff.

Initially I my attitude was "I'm not going to look for customers till I have a website" then when that was done, it became "Im not going to look for customers till I have a business address" and so on.

Once I made the conscious decision to say "F--- it", my business grew. While your name isn't trivial, spending 2 months deciding on one sounds like a waste.

Important point which I think you know already judging by the name you're suggesting. Try and keep one core keyword in the brand name which you've done with the marketing.

      Thanks for your help guys..

I understand that getting caught up with the name shouldn't prevent me moving forward, but I didn't want to start up a business and then find that the name sucked and I had to go changing it and confusing clients and end up having wasted a lot of time branding and starting over again.

I have thought of a name now - Wolfhound Marketing - the wolfhound being an iconic animal here in Ireland and throughout other countries. According to Wikipedia:

The standard of The American Kennel Club describes the breed as "Of great size and commanding appearance, the Irish Wolfhound is remarkable in combining power and swiftness with keen sight.

The Wolfhound of today is far from the one that struck fear into the hearts of the Ancient Romans. Irish Wolfhounds are often favored for their loyalty, affection, patience and devotion.

I think they are good traits to be associated with and I like the name... so I'm happy with that.

Thanks everyone for your inputs - much appreciated!
