    Thanks for Ewen.

What a brilliant piece of marketing, eh!

I wonder what the conversion was? Probably won't know till a year down the road.

I just love it when these guys think out of the box. Gives guys like us really great ideas to run with.

    Thanks for the link.

They state a 32% conversion, meaning visits to their website. As to actual sales of the $90,000+ car, I haven't found any mention. But knowing what I know about auto sales, here's what I'd expect:

Not everyone is in the market for a car right now, though you may know someone who is.

The prospect may be loyal to another brand.
Or maybe Porsches is all you ever buy.
They targeted income areas. It doesn't say whether they cross-selected for past and present porsche owners.

If you're not in the market for a car right now, you will be in due time. Then this becomes another top of the mind awareness mailer.

If they can get you to come to the dealership, you just might decide to get a new vehicle, even if you're ok with the one you currently have, just because a new car is nicer than an older car.

You may not buy the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera S, but you might get another model.

This is obviously a more expensive type mailer since it's so labor intensive. Plus they're taking a $90,000 vehicle out on the road - so anything could happen to that car. The least of it is they're putting mileage on a car they want to sell at top dollar. So there's $$ risk involved with this campaign beyond saving postage.

The offset is it's a high dollar sale, which makes it worth the risk and the method.

Ultimately, the sales are determined by what happens at the dealership, not by the mailer.

But it's very cool. 32% visited the website. Now I'm thinking how I can apply this to my business. If they don't first think I'm stalking.

The 32% was actually the percentage of homeowners that booked a day and time to go into the dealer and test drive.. So that is pretty high... Once their in the dealership they've shown interest and its smooth sailing.

That's not what I read. Granted, some of the bloggers stated certain things, such as 32% interested in test drives, but that was their misinterpretation of the facts. The old "telephone effect" where the story changes as it goes from person to person.

The official video states at 1:17 in, the 32% were visits to a "website where they could book a test drive". It did not say 32% booked a test drive or that 32% came in to the dealership for a test drive. It's only saying that the website offered a test drive and that 32% visited the website. If you found other official information, not just some blogger commenting on the campaign, I'd be interested in seeing it.

BTW, people aren't going to take a test drive unless they're serious buyers. Very few take a test drive for mere entertainment's sake because they know they correspondingly will be subjected to the sales process if they step foot inside a dealership and that acts as a deterrent. Also people are hesitant, even when in buying mode, to take a test drive because they're fearful of falling in love with the car which they still haven't become serious about buying.

To get 32% actually wanting to take test drives, you'd need to find people wanting to buy now, who desire that vehicle, with a compelling offer to do business right now. I can't say that'll get 32%, but those are the ingredients to go from looker to car owner.

You are very right Mister Me.. My apologies I was the one who read wrong...

Yes but 32% visiting the website is really high when you consider the average response to a direct marketing campaign is something like 0.2%

It's only brilliant if it worked.

32% visiting a website is not how anyone in direct response marketing would PIKE success. It's how an ad agency (Lowe Roche) would PIKE success!

Somehow Lowe Roche didn't mention the number who actually booked and came in for a test drive. This is where the rubber hits the road if you're in direct response marketing ... LEADS.

The advertising campaign cost Pfaff Auto BIG BUCKS 'cause ad agencies don't work cheap. Since Lowe Roche isn't PIKING Pfaff's ROI I've got to assume there wasn't one. But there was a HUGE return for the Lowe Roche agency since they were written up in the trades (free advertising to potential clients PIKING "look how clever we are" and them buying clever instead of results) and a ton of blogs who parroted what was said in the original video release.

Lowe Roche is brilliant at marketing themselves on Pfaff's dime.

That is great idea and twist... You could do this in a day just like the dealership.

wake up early go take some photos (or most businesses have a picture of their business online so you don't even have to leave home)

Then you can drop it in the mail or leave it at the business at night..

And this is my main issue with these agencies, they too often get involved in the circle jerk of winning awards and being creative rather than bringing in customers for their clients.

8 years ago, Martin Howey taught a somewhat similar method when it comes to getting offline clients...

The piece looked like a photocopy of a newspaper article with the picture of the president speaking at some function. And the article would go on about how the prospect's business is growing by leaps and bounds, and what an amazing service they offer, etc. You'd customize this thing for each prospect, print it out, frame it, and mail it to the prospect. I only use this template once as a fun gift to an existing client so don't have any numbers to gauge the effectiveness.

I'm happy the agencies are like that, it leaves tremendous opportunity for new paradigm marketers helping businesses get solid measurable success.

I guess the reason they went the extra expense to put a real car in the driveway was for the video. haha. I hope the client didn't actually pay for that.

I do like the mass customization/personalization. It's the future in hyper targeted marketing right down to the individual. Lot's of different existing technology can make that happen at an affordable cost these days.

    This is fantastic!

Also the printer they are using is a Xerox which one can get for free through the Xerox free color printers program.

It could also be used for big ticket home improvement, but with photoshop.

Everyone is debating whether it really got a 32% response rate, neglecting all the PR value it got!

Yes we are debating the response rate because PR VALUE means squat to my wallet..

If I didnt acquire any new customers or make more money back than I spent on the campaign it was useless. Heck if I didn't even break even then it was useless..

Sure maybe I got some new people in my funnel... but if they never planned on buying anything what good was it..

The only thing I would do for "PR Value" is charity/non profit work, community events for my clients/customers/patients/guests, or free talks and seminars on topics I know....and most of those wouldn't require alot of money spent or loss

Wow! I completely forgot about that program...a good 5+ years back, some photographers I knew that had a "baby's first year photo plan" used that program to pay for their direct mail campaign to new parents. It was a wax coat printer I believe. I still have a sample mailer one of them used.

Anyone interested in the program can find more info at: https://www.freecolorprinters.xerox.com

It's sponsored by Xerox. They make their money back on supplies.

I've been thinking of a way to use this for home improvement, so far no ideas.

When people want their homes remodeled, only thing you can really do is show them other homes before/after. Or vanity pictures with good looking housewives in newly remodeled rooms like one of Ewens older ads. If you plan on photoshopping additions onto the house, that would be a massive waste of time. Plus most home improvement is done inside, so again, I don't see this applying in anyway.

Or maybe I just lack creativity. =]

It's a real b*tch to use at first but mastic's "dream home" software can do incredibly realistic simulations of siding (including vinyl, stone, stucco, and different trim). It costs about $500 a year I think unless you're a mastic VIP dealer in which case they give you it free.

Did you notice they also put the cards in people's mail boxes? That might be OK in Canada but in the U.S. it is a big Bozo no-no. Uncle sugar wants his cut and it is called postage.

Cute idea but in the land of the free and home of the brave, w/o written permission to use your home for advertising purposes, the user could be in court.

Other than that, great idea generator.

If done by agency , probably cost more few thousand , so I`m not sure if they achieved any ROI...

Yeah it doesn't mean squat to YOUR wallet, but every time my website/product (physical, tangible product) was featured in the media, it resulted in $1,000- $30,000 sales just from that, with most being from $5,000-$15,000. And I know others who have had even better success depending on the appeal of their product (how broad it goes).

Sometimes people are so heavy into IM, they "miss the boat" for how marketing really plays out outside of the IM sphere. So yeah, I'd take the PR value of that any time. It probably amounted to hundreds of thousands of paid advertising costs gotten for free and most definitely had an impact on sales and leads.

So maybe PR value means nothing to YOU, but it definitely has impact for PORSCHE.

I've been thinking of a way to use this for home improvement, so far no ideas.

When people want their homes remodeled, only thing you can really do is show them other homes before/after.
It depends on what you're marketing. I could see it working well for roof replacement, windows, big landscaping jobs, painting/siding, depending on where you are, you could do it with swimming pools/hot tubs, decks/backyards and you could get those photos from google maps street view.

And what sort of app could be used to make the changes ? paint comes to mind I suppose but are there any pro apps designed to do things like alterations to buildings landscapes etc ?

edit - just read Bobs reply above

I think it's an amazing idea! That is a perfect example of thinking outside the box with advertising.

I don't understand why they went through all the trouble of parking the car in every driveway.

    Can you say photoshop?

I've heard car dealers run on about 3% margins, so they still have to sell a few Porsche's to break even. 90,000 x .03 = $2700

So Lowe Roche is the big winner here. (And those of us who do something with photoshop for our marketing.)

On average, car dealers get multiple income streams from the sale of a car (commission, kickbacks, bonuses from lenders, etc). More than likely they make a whole lot more than $2700 on the sale of a $90,000 car. Of course I can't say for sure.

I've seen that video a long time ago....

It was a very good idea and once again: Personalization creates ownership!

My problem is that I've searched for days for other stories like that and i didn't find anything!

Any of you know other ones?

instead of taking a picture, why not just knock on the door and ask the man of the house to test drive the new porsche right then and there?

"hi, im from the local porsche dealer and I brought over the new porsche for you to test drive".

this way the dealer will be on a "first name basis" with all it's neighbors (rich neighbors).

Because we need to "pull" and not "push"? Or maybe because everyone would want to test drive but how many of them would be really interested in buying it?

      My own thoughts...
