When using email tracking, should you reveal to the business that you know they opened your email?

I've been contacting multiple offline businesses recently using a service that tells me if the email was opened, links clicked on, etc. and I've noticed several business owners open the email multiple times and even click on the links more than once without replying.

I know these are at least "warm" leads and I'm planning my follow-up contacts but I'm wondering what your opinions are about letting them know that I know that they're looking and haven't acted yet?

I feel that it might make me appear more professional by showing them I know what they did, but I'm also afraid that it may turn some owners off with the "big brother" aspect.

So what do you think?

    50/50 at best.

    Some of my mailings I in fact, in a follow up email, did elude to the fact that I was aware that they opened the email. I simply phrased the acknowledgement as an opportunity to see if there was something they were unsure of in the email, or didn't quite understand, or were just simply un-interested in. I actually got the chance to get some new clients by simply being upfront and finding out why they read and clicked but did not take action. I simply asked, and fixed.

    On the other hand, I could definitely see how someone, especially in this day and age, may go the whole, "big brother" route and get offended.

    Like I said, 50/50. Just figure out if you can take the rejection for being big brother, if so, get to it

    I personally wouldn't right now.
    It comes off as stalker-ish to me.
    Or big brother as you put it.

    Just call them up. Say you were following up on whatever the email was about.

    Later on, if they become a client, you could reveal it. Down the road though, when you have a great relationship built.

      Don't let them know. I'd be pissed and probably unsubscribe if I knew you were tracking that kind of thing, unless you are selling them on an e-mail service/IM product, and then you're showing your prowess.

      But if you just use it to decide which leads are worth following up they'll never know the difference.

    a customer of mine .. only calls after he sees they have opened the email 3 times

    works for him, he has been bragging about.. ok, maybe not bragging.. but definitely uptalking it for over a year.

    lets call it swaggering, instead of bragging.
    either way.. he is convinced it is an edge ...

    I think I want to know what service you use...so I can use it too! Does it also let you know if it was forwarded?

    Is there any service that lets you delete or destroy an email (even prevent it from being forwarded) either before...or once it has been opened? Thanx!

    Do you have to mention in your email that you know about their actions? I don't believe this will make you look more professional and I don't think many people would like the feeling of being monitored. I think such an email may sound a little pushy.
