Bound to happen....first customer wanting an eCommerce site

Ok, I am working on my 4th client since getting started, and they want an eCommerce enabled site. Prior to that, the other 3 have only wanted basic informational websites which were easy enough to do. I am using Wordpress based sites.

My question is this, what "setup" would you recommend for an eCommerce site? I have a photographer that wants his site to have the ability to add his images in a gallery to a shopping cart, with full purchasing abilities, etc. What would you recommend for the best plugins paid or free. I have read alot about Woo and a few others, but thought I would solicit the forums's opinions.

Related to that....to accept visa/mastercard payments....does the paypal option at checkout take care of that? Or will they need to set up a merchant account with someone.

As always, much thanks to this forum, if not for you guys I would not have had the courage to get out there and do this.....and for someone with NO technology background, I have self taught myself through this forum and tons of reading!!! Thank you all!

Hi there - I have only been "actively" looking for clients for about 4 weeks total now. I have spent a lot of time though learning, reading, determining what services I wanted to offer, which ones that I could be good at, etc. Anyway, I happened to get lucky and knew a guy starting a new business, and I just asked him if I could do his site. If he liked it, he could then pay for it..if not, then he could go about his way. I figured I needed to get that first one under my belt.

Well, he loved his website, and my second client came by way of referral from him. My third client CALLED me because he was a competitor of one of the sites I put up, he had seen that his competitor had one and he wanted to "one up" them basically. My most recent client I got by just passing out business cards in our downtown....they checked out my site liked it, plus they liked one of the other sites I had on their in my portfolio.

Anyway, long way to say this........Bottom line, if you do good work, I am finding that your work sells itself. Offer a free site or two to get some clients under your belt, then leverage them for referrals, competitors, etc. Over deliver!!

From your description of what your photographer wants to do you may be better off using a proper eCommerce platform, like Prestashop. However, for shopping carts on WordPress I use EcWid - it's easy to use and the support is excellent.

    Cheers,

    Martin.
