Cold calling - How to deal with "...get him to call back"

Hi all

I made some cold calls last week and most of the gatekeepers said:

"Can I get your details and I'll get him to call you back"

Whats the best way to approach this if cold calling is a numbers game?

Call back next time? I'll most likely get the same reply right?

Move on?

Thanks for your replies

That's usually code for we don't know you, and you sound fishy; go away.

    Try changing your approach.

there are some people that if you call back every week for a while they will eventually
answer, but the truth is, that's too much energy to expend.

If your having problems getting through the secretary,
try making up a few new approaches, and practicing them

and always, always try to sound like your supposed to be calling.

Real quick... do you mind telling me if he is in a meeting or on vacation?

Doesn't always work, but it will tell you if you should call back in a day or two, or in a week or two.

Cold calling is hard game and if you stick with it, will pay dividends in the long run.

If you can, pick out the 20-30 most important game changing clients in your niche and then focus ALL of your marketing on them.

Go out your way to be really helpful, do a free website analysis, tell them what changes may affect them in the future regarding industry changes. Just make sure they don't forget you and know who you are!

Send them free gifts, and be imaginative with them if you can. By focusing on these 30 clients, you can reduce your marketing costs and really be targeted in your follow-ups.

If you are targeting a specific niche. Go ahead and offer free services to just one of them, then use them for testimonials and the occasional name drop. Works every time!

The way out is to dial more numbers.

This is the best advice anyone could give you.
Time wasted is money not being made.

Now if you insist, mail a personal letter to the potential client.
Hand write it, stamp it and mail out your follow up on the information that the "gate keeper" gave the business owner.

So in a nut shell, move on and stop wasting time.

"That's fine, when will he be in the office again?" or
"When do you expect him to be in again?"

(This redirects their attention to your question)

"Probably tomorrow afternoon. What's your name?"

    Don't answer...

"Ok, I'll just try him then, I'm hard to reach. Thanks."

    Hang up.

DO NOT give your details, just say "no thanks, I'll try back" if they insist on asking again. Then, move on to the next number.

Email first, then followup with a phone call, this way its more of a "warm call" then a "cold call"

Change your approach. Cold calling is very challenging, you need to be creative in order to get past gatekeepers.

I go with MWind on this one. Usually, I feel gatekeepers tell you that because the business owner told them to either avoid telemarketing calls in general or telemarketing calls for SEO/Web Design.

If MWind's approach seems a little intrusive for someone starting out (which I don't think it is) at the very least I would tell them "that's fine, I'll give a call later."

Better to find out if their pattern is constant, then to give a name and number that the owner probably won't consider or see for a second.

There are many ways but to better assist you what are you offering for services?

      Example rep management...

Hello I have a few reviews about your company who do I need to speak with?

      That works like a charm...

      Or

I have gathered some information of your company from the Internet who do I need to speak to?

If you have a name just ask for him

      Hey is Dan in.

Honestly bottom line just keep trucking on the phone number numbers and I'd I mention numbers.

Try building a rapport with the GK first, simple things like a joke about it being Monday etc can really loosen them up.

Also how are you asking for the DM? Maybe rethink your wording, or try something like the "unsure" technique a few on here seem to have luck with.

Also as others have said just keep dialing. It really is a numbers game
