Where to advertise a professional resume business?

Hi all,

Im thinking of starting to do professional resumes for people. I think this can be a good idea as there are many people out of work right now.

Linkedin perhaps? :p I would go with a dedicated website with real testimonials and some sample resumes and I would place direct to site banner ads on the sites that instruct people on how to write a resume. Make an ad saying something like "why your resume was thrown out" or "your employers know you're using a template. Get it down right here." That should work very well, especially if your resume is great!

This may be one of the few niches which can be 'mined' for ROI on Linkedin! The clicks are about $2.00 per - just an FYI.

You may want to do a syntax search something like - intitle:jobsites or intitle:job boards, check out the listed sites and see if there is a way to post free ads or paid if possible.

A huge (and free source) of localizing (geo-targeting) is social bookmarking sites. Interestingly and I was quite shocked by this research trend - Craigslist is one of the most competitive websites (including monster, careerbuilder etc) for your niche market.

    Hi Ryan,

Tough business to make profitable. People who are unemployed usually have no money.

I've tried the resume writing business...and for about a dozen years all I've done is give away freebies.

And my resumes work! Nowadays I just do them for friends.

LinkedIn may be a great place though, because I've never figured out how to make LI into a lead generator. A guy on there has been cleaning up for years with webinars on how to make your LI profile become a headhunter magnet...I think his program is $400 and people seem to pull out their credit cards for that.

There are job hunting forums, which I don't have time to develop a reputation on...

Stay away from CL and the $10 resumes or you'll burn yourself out churning product...

And you'll be competing against individuals or companies who have "templates" and just fill the same crap out over and over again, blasting out products that may look OK but aren't effective...

I have thought about niche sites and adwords...people do have "pain" in this situation, and some must have money to invest on a proper interview generation tool...I just don't know how to find them, and it's not worth it on a cost-benefit basis compared to everything else I do to make money.

    There's Facebook...

You'll have to choose: do you make resumes to be seen by hiring managers and to generate enough interest to make the interview happen, or do you make resumes to be scanned by computers for key words?

I guess if I were to jump into that biz full time and drop everything else in a fit of lunacy, I'd find top headhunters to partner up with, and get them to direct their clients to me. Stay high end, and make good money for each resume crafted.

Professional resume jobs are kinda of difficult, you can easily get results when you put up ads on campuses, word of mouth and maybe newspapers.
