Hi Warriors

I have just had a call from an irate client who woke this morning to a couple of reviews from a begrudging ex employee on a couple of online directories that are slanderous about his company.

I have advised him to contact a lawyer, can anyone advise on a way to have these reviews removed from the directories,? seems the reviewer has left a false name too. Any help appreciated.

Mike

whoever is doing this would want to be very careful as they are being slanderous, firstly he will need to contact the publishers of the directories and notify them of the issue and get the reviews taken down, he will need to contact his lawyer and let him know an ex employee is being slanderous and trying to destroy his business, on the technical side i am not full sure someone else may be able to answer this but it may be possible to track the IP address of the person making the comments, nasty business

Over here, one of my buddies sued an employee for $50,000 and they ended up settling outside of court, in exchange for deleting what they said, issuing a retraction in places that wouldn't allow a deleted comment, and $5,000 in damages.

Considering that the websites are unlikely to pull them down (lying isn't really against the rules) and that a court may or may not do anything (depends on what is said and how the UK courts handle it) I would advise the following.

    1. Have him (or you in his place) reply calmly and truthfully to each of these. The goal is to show they are false without coming off badly. Be professional and don't get into a he said she said. In the long run one bad review will not mean a who lot if you have a reputation management strategy in place.

    2. Focus the reputation management strategy on these sites so that the newer reviews will bury it. No one will care about 1 bad review if there are dozens of normal good to great reviews. If you have not been implimenting a reputation management strategy this is a great time to start. He can now see how valuable it is. If he had a lot of normal reviews the sting of one bad one would be less.

Remember you are here to offer him advice on how to handle this now that it has happened and how he can actively work to promote a positive image on the web. Leave the rest to the lawyers.

But in the end I think you will end up doing more to help him vs the lawyers.
