If my wife can do this.. (Cold Calling)

I just thought I would share this with you guys. My wife recently quit her job because shes pregnant and I pretty much asked her too. Its our first baby and I want her to be able to rest. (She worked at a very physical job)

Anyways, as some of you know, we have started a business recently and have been trying to get some clients.

So, my wife having NEVER cold called a day in her life and having no computer knowledge whatsoever,(seriously, I bought her first laptop/smart phone) made 100 calls on Monday using a simple script to set appointments. She called me at the end of the day ecstatic as ever because she gathered 3 emails and set 3 appointments.

I just thought I'd share because I don't have the time to call. Now that she's getting the hang of it, I hope we'll be getting more business!

I also have to give big thanks to mwind076 for consulting her and providing the script! Melissa you guys are awesome!

Now to start getting some lists together..

Do you have any idea how lucky you are?

Sometimes its impossible to get family to see the dream, much less participate.

Hhahahaaa....I feel ya brother! I've got #1 down for the count. It's almost funny in a way because when you have the "entrepreneurial spirit" in your blood, it's almost as much of a necessity to be able to do what you got to do as it is to breath. The fire in your brain is like a machine that just refuses to turn off....maybe that's what they call OCD?

And sometimes.....the spouse just can't or won't ever get it.

he did not hire her, he said " we have started a business recently"

That is completely different. Having a partner that you can completely trust.
Both continuously pushing towards the same goal, is awesome.

        Truly.

Most partners will not show any real interest until you put a big phat check down on the table! To have one who can see the vision with you before it comes to pass and who wants to help get the ball rolling is all good!

This is why I think my brother Michael is a good partner for me- because we are pushing for the same things and I "want" to see him get rich.

A wife and a husband "want" to see each other get rich. I dont think there is a married man on here, who wouldnt like to see his wife take interest in his business, and be able to run it if anything ever happened to him.

When its just your passion alone it can only be SO fulfilling.... but when you have someone to share it with, that you WANT to share it with thats awesome!

I know a guy whose daughter runs his whole 100 seat organization, and knows every department from top to bottom. and can do any job in the building including his...

She is a sharp daughter, and he is a PROUD father, and I cant help but hope for the same thing one day. He gets to work together with his kids protecting the family farm.

Agree with that. I'd tell outside family and friends as little as possible. Let them see your success instead.

I disagree...and since we are working with you making your calls...you know that we are husband/wife, and work very well together! It's a very small percentage that can make it work, but when it does, it's GOLDEN!

Believe me , it took some convincing her. I've had many "Ideas" from amazon, Clickbank, etc. This is something that she can put her hands in. Its not virtual per say. After she started to actually see results , I started to win her over. Our main goal is not really to get rich, but provide a service to people. I want people to come to us because they've heard how much we've helped them. Our goal is to simply make our life comfortable be able to help our families and be able to provide a good future for our unborn baby.

Like I tell her, we don't want the whole pie. Just a nice little slice of it.

Rule #2: All Rules Are Meant To Be Broken.

I've seen personally and in my father's super-successful business what happens when you put kids, wives, brother-in-laws in-charge or responsible for certain tasks.

Stealing... laziness... a sense of holier-than-thou attitude and sense of entitlement. From friends and family. All of this was from a mature business.

I remember asking my step-mother how it was to work FOR my dad. Her answer was, "I don't work FOR him; I work WITH him."

They divorced 3 years later, split it all down the middle.

I remain the only relative having not been hired nor fired from my father's business. He fired his wife twice, his adopted son and daughter twice, his sister-in-law twice, and I think he fired his father-in-law once but brough him back, too.

Then again, his right-hand man was his childhood best friend whom he could entrust to get the job done.

Me personally? My wife and I are too much alike -- we'd kill each other long enough if we were both involved in the same business. We play much better than we work together. I like it that way.

I suppose that could happen. I've seen that happen with my Parents. However, she knows I need the help in getting the word out. I have a full time salary position as well and don't have the time to call. She can get pissy if I try to over do things and I know that. I respect her limits. I had to learn how to talk to her and not down to her. She's not my employee, shes a teammate. With that being said, she can sit at home in her PJ's if she wants and set appointments.

          DesertSand,

Congratulations on the success. You are indeed a lucky fellow if the scenario holds up. After the baby arrives the dynamics will change so there's something to factor into the equation. I am NOT saying everything will turn to crap. I'm saying the dynamices will change so start thinking and talking about them NOW.

After all, why kill a good thing. You don't want to be like some guys and burn through multiples of the female species. Half of a half of a half of a half half leaves you with nothing and in some cases less than nothing.

          Good luck to you.

I think if someone is "taught" or told that cold calling is hard, and tough, then that person is going to go into that situation expecting that. And their behaviour and how they make the actual calls, what they say, their tone of voice, etc, will in a way fulfill that expectation.

Maybe the OP's wife is one of those people who were never told or taught that cold calling was hard. and that is a great benefit for her if that is true, because when she approaches her calls, she will not be expecting rejection, or expecting to put in "hard" effort.

She will be more open, and relaxed, and this state of mind will have an effect on the people she talks to on the phone.

I am one of those weird people who have never had a problem with cold calling.

I understand why others do, and why I don't. And it mostly has to do with where their focus is.

When I talk to someone on the phone, I don't focus on the possibility of rejection, or if they might holler at me, or hang up, etc. I am very curious and playful and find it fun, because I get to be someone else for a little while, and I naturally love the sales process, so I like asking questions and gathering information because it is like a puzzle to be solved to get someone to buy.

Here's a tip, the next time you go to make a call, instead of focusing on the possible negative reaction that the person who answers might have, instead focus on how good you will feel AFTER you have made the call.

      Try it out.

You know there is a logical explanation for this that us people in sales management know about.

Its called Ignorance on fire and I would pay money to be there again.
    - You just do the dials
    - You dont know what to expect
    - You are more natural
    - People love it
    - No bad habits
    - You are not too smart for your own good and messing yourself up.

It is amazing and like I said - I would zap my brain and be there again myself if I could.

    Cheers
