How get affiliate commissions for hosting of clients sites

I'm trying to figure out a a way to get affiliate commissions for "totally done for you" websites.

I do the site. When I talk to the client about hosting, I send an affiliate link & ask them to sign up.

Clients are not tech savvy and this is not going well.

It's just too much to ask of them. More money ... another totally confusing step in their eyes.

I'm well paid & am thinking of including their first year or 6 months of hosting on the cheapest HostGator account. Afterwards, they either start paying for the hosting with their credit card, or pay me for the renewal period (with a markup)

I would like to get an affiliate commission, but you're not supposed to use your own affiliate code to sign up yourself -- I believe this is what I am doing when signing up ON BEHALF OF a client. I'm using my own credit card after all.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I could buy a reseller package, but I'm not sure how many of these clients I'll have. It's not the main part of my business. Just some good cash flow right now. I even have my own dedicated server for the main part of my IM business. I do NOT want to be on the hook for client websites.

Thoughts & advice?

I'd recommend seeking out a smaller web host that focuses on quality & not cheap crap services if you "don't want to be on the hook" for your clients websites.

I would certainly not recommend throwing a bunch of accounts onto the "cheapest hostgator account" as that's extremely bad practice both from a security standpoint & performance stand point.

What type of customers are these to you? Are these local customers? Higher paying customers? Should you be looking out for their best interest when it comes to hosting, or just throwing them at the wolves so you can get paid your commission?

I think that a smaller web host that doesn't have a corporate greed structure would work better with you as far as using your own affiliate link. We have a few like this & as long as the account information is different from yours & matches the customers, there's no problem.

Is there something I should be aware of with hostgator? I've found the bigger companies have better 24/7 support , tools & resources than small companies (who might simply have a reseller account on hostgator, bluehost and the like)

      >>throwing a bunch of accounts onto the "cheapest hostgator account"

This would be 1 client site per cheapest hostgator account (hatchling). The client's login would be separate from any other client.

This is not always the case. Of course my opinion will sound biased, since I own LiquiLayer Technologies, but actions speak louder than words.

By "bigger companies" you're talking about the companies that blatantly lie about what they're providing you. Unlimited? Hardly, there's limits, even more so than that of a company that strictly poses limits.

Overloaded servers is another one. These "bargain basement" web hosting companies maximize profits & cut costs by packing as many websites on one server as they possibly can. What's the result? As soon as a website starts using the resources they're already selling you, they suspend the site & force you to upgrade.

I could go on & on. The consensus here on the forum is to use the cheapest service you can find, throw as many addon domains onto the account as possible, then complain about getting suspended/terminated or having poor performance.

EDIT: Even at the same time, HostGator is a massive reseller - they resell what used to be ThePlanet's servers & now SoftLayer.

If you can manage a dedi, hosting your client sites is a value add and reduces points of contact... Not to mention not having to coordinate with a third party for updates/problems/etc and you're building residuals.

*disclaimer- a time you need to be concerned about hosting clients, is for email liability. If they're not using an exchange server already, you can find yourself in a world of shit pretty fast without experience.

Surely you can't be serious? That's 1 of about 1,000 "concerns".....

I agree & understand this. It's a marketing thing so potential customers don't have to worry or think about it. Removes bandwidth from being a concern or point of confusion.

Yep. That's a valid issue & can be a problem.

I don't want to be in the hosting business, am looking to make it easy on my clients by building hosting into my service ... all while trying to get an affiliate commission. After all, I'm sending clients to a hosting company & costing myself some margin.

I'll tell you what. I can't make any offers or anything here on the forum, would you mind shooting me an email at brent@liquilayer.com? I may have a solution that can work with a percentage recurring payout.
