I occasionally read references to website rental (as opposed to sale). In this case I don't mean having a niche/geo optimized lead capture site that you would rent out to a business so they would get all the leads, but instead let's say a brochure site or ecommerce site that is paid for via ongoing monthly payments instead of one big one up front.
  • I don't know much about this and so I'm trying to find out more. For example:
  • is this a common thing to do, or is rare?
  • what is a rule of thumb for how much to charge? would people recommend a monthly charge that is a rough percentage of what the site would cost if purchased normally? (for example, sell a site for $1000 or rent it out for $100 a month)
  • what is the benefit for the buyer of doing this? Is it simply to have reduced payments, or is something else driving the attractiveness of this option
  • are there are any sticky legal issues that arise out of this, like who owns the asset.
  • any other things I should know?

Thanks in advance!

    • is this a common thing to do, or is rare? I believe it is common, i have seen plenty of sites for one niche e.g. accounting niche, offering a monthly, quarterly or yearly fee.

(for example, sell a site for $1000 or rent it out for $100 a month) Forget about selling the site (that is not what is important to your tentants, you need to brand your site as "go-to site" for your niche. I've heard anything from $100 to $400 per month. you also need to articulate the value the client gets from renting with you. For e.g. I see no reason why you cannot charge something like $3k per year to someone whose client value is $6k per client.

    • are there are any sticky legal issues that arise out of this, like who owns the asset. As long as they dont but the site, you own it, as simple as that.
    • any other things I should know? ummm...you need to brand it as the "go-to-site" for your niche . Hope i could help, Im sure there are other Warriors that will chime in.
    Thanks in advance!

With website rental you basically own the site and can pass the leads you collect to customers that will either pay you per lead. You can of course offer a flat monthly fee for your service as an alternative.

I am having some trouble understanding what you mean by saying "website rental".

Are you offering a website that is for rent to different clients?
