so im basically selling websites, mobile sites, seo, youtube videos and the like and have been having minimal success on cold calling for appointments, and knocking on doors. i'm not quite sure what im doing wrong; when i go door too door, i show up to a small business 90% of the time wearing slacks and a dress shit, and the rest of the time jeans and a button down shirt, i dont think the reactions are different regardless of what i am wearing,
i walk in and 99 percent of the time the person i first see is always like hey can i help you.... and from there i go into "yeah actually, i noticed that i couldnt find your website" and then usually they will say, "oh im not in charge of that... that is up to so and so"
so if that person is there i try to talk to them, and if not, cool, im gone once i find the right person they usually ask the same question, most of the time they tell me some random excuse, and then ask me, "why do you ask?"
i usually say "well sir/ma'am, thats what i do, me and my company specialize in web design and creative marketing solutions, and well i noticed you didnt have much/anything on the internet and was just trying to figure out why"
then i listen to their bullshit excuse about im thinking about it, im flat broke, or my cousin bill is thinking about making me one, or i dont need a website and things like that
i give all the rebuttals i can such as "well why wait for cousin bill to do it, every time someone googles *whatever business it is* and the other guy comes up and you dont, your loosing money" and "really its not as expensive as you might think, im sure we could come to some sort of agreement" and things along those lines.
i explaining to them things we can do, and the benefits of seo, and basically ways we can get that specific business to get more customers; i.e. fb promotions, text campaigns, etc etc, i tell them that were the little guy so its your gonna have someone sit down and figure out what you want and its going to be exactly what you want, etc etc
sometimes it works, and some people are like yeah, maybe i shouldn't wait.... but im having trouble with alot of people just no matter what i say, they just say "not interested", some of those people who tell you to leave before you even say what you have to say, and then people who dont wanna say no, but they tell you to come back in a month, or a week, and then they still arent ready, any suggestions on what to do or say to get them to go for it, and im not even trying to get them to commit on writing a check right then and there, im trying to get them to meet with my partner who then sell's them on a dollar amount and the amount of services to go with it all too. im just not quite sure what im doing wrong here, and im sure you guys will pick this to bits but, oh well

i tried the demo website on a couple customers in the very very beginning, two of them actually, and they had to "talk over it with their partner" and i offered up a demo site, and they said sure, of course, free stuff? and i just asked for their email, and gave them mine of course and they told me they would email me their logo in a vector image, and they just never did, complete blow off, but maybe i'll have to use that card ALOT more often....

Don't do the full site; do a screenshot.

    QUALIFY your prospect.

You have to try something like this more than twice before giving up.

    Also, I need to mention

    http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...rting-now.html

It's a different method than mine, but it also works.

I recently created a blog post about qualifying prospects.

Maybe you'd be interested in giving it a read.

    Read it here.

Hope it helps you. If you've got any additional questions, I'd be happy to answer them for you. Just shoot me an email over at:

well i was at it all day and didnt have a great success, but i think i hit that turning point that james guy was talking about and jason talked about in his video's where i dont care what happens in the calls anymore, like i dont feel as stressed when i make the calls, and id say i started getting past the gate keeper 99% percent of the time, only one lady stopped me and that was because i asked to speak to the person who is in charge of their advertising and things like that, and she said we just bought our yellow pages ad for the year, and i tried to salvage it by saying, well i dont do anything like that actually, i do web design, and i noticed that you didnt have one, and she said, oh well im a web designer too, i have a bachelors in web and graphic design, yada yada yada, and i was like oh...., but generally speaking my problems with gate keepers have gone away, so im pretty sure ive passed that hump, but im still a little tongue tied when i get to the decision maker, or if they say "oh thats me" it kinda catches me off guard, i think im still half expecting them to tell me to go to hell. but what you said and the s62731 guy said in your video's motivated me alot, i actually woke up looking forward to calling. i set a number, 130, i did 65 in the morning and 65 after lunch, tomorrow i will bump it up to 140. i think i can do this, can you give me some help on my script, i'll post it in aseparate post.

You've got to shorten that...you'll lose them quickly. Take a breath, lead them, use less words, and don't leave VM's. Unless it's to call back and use it as an in.

I dont know if this would help or not,
but take a squint at this to see if it
helps to highlight any issues that might
be holding you back and preventing you
    from achieving higher closing conversions.

Hope it helps and gets you thinking...

the voice mail thing was just an experiment i saw, you leave a message saying you made them a free demo website for them allready, and if they are interested, they call you back, and then you make them the demo after the fact. some guy did that with a VM service, i know the rule of thumb is never leave a voice mail. but i did it 5 times today, i was planning on doing 5 voice mails a day, and after a week or two, see if anyone actually calls me back.... i mean if i 5 people out of 25 voicemails call me back... i didnt have to do any work for anyone who was not interested, and i know i have them on the hook.... if i was remotely interested in a website, and this guy had one all ready had one made for me... sure i'd take a look right?

K, all good, but...are you calling back the VM's whether they call you or not? THAT is why you leave them a VM. It's good that you aren't expecting them to call you, because you'd be waiting a while.

If you're going to LVM, make it short "this is Melissa, sorry I didn't catch you in the office, I'll try you back or you can give me a call at XXX-XXXX." Then, when they don't call you back...you call them in a few days, and say to the GK "is Bob in the office?" If she gives you flack "I left him a VM the other day and just wanted to catch him - when do you expect him." If she give you to him you say "I left you a VM the other day, this is Melissa...I didn't hear back from you but I figured you were busy, so I wanted to try to catch you in the office..." go into your pitch, you've got him on the phone.

      "NO!"

      NO FREE ANYTHING!!

You cheapen yourself and you attract bottomfeeders.

This should only be used in the closing process and only IF the prospect genuinely wants to "test drive" before buying. At that point, you set up a subdomain, limited demo site and don't make it too detailed...or maybe they'll get their friend to look at it and steal the design.

What I teach people who sell websites to do is show the demo for only a short period at the end of the sales discussion--and get a yes or a no right after they do that. Then the site either becomes the client's, or disappears forever.

      All prospects lie.

Don't forget that. You and me too, when we're prospects. We lie to protect ourselves from being ripped off: we lie about how much money we have (true budget), we lie about how bad the problem really is (watch House, MD to see examples of this in other parts of life).

Call and SORT. Separate those who urgently want what you offer from those who do not. Do this enough and you will find good clients.

As one of the people you would be "selling" to I can not agree more with Jason. FREE is never free and when the price is too low business owners and managers worry that it will be too expensive vs doing it right.

You can literally offer me a great website at $199 and I won't buy it because the price is too low so I assume the website will suck.
