Using a Demo Site to Close Deals over the Phone | Testing the Waters

I saw this thread about making a demo site and using it as a tool to close clients on design deals and other up-sells: http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...t-website.html

I have thought about this in the past but never really took action. After hearing about someone having decent success with this technique I jumped on designing the first demo site last night.

I have a list of 10 business that have websites using services like yellow book, wix, wordpress.com, and other platforms. I make sure the site looks outdated, poorly designed, or has major problems that need fixed. Often I will look into each business more before targeting them. If you seem like you know the core operations of your prospects business it makes them feel more important and shows that you have done your research. Use this research to structure the site based off of each businesses personal needs.

My first Target:

I designed this demo website for a Bulk Herb Shop in my area: The Herb Shop | The Herb Shop in Grants Pass, Oregon

Theme I used:Organic Shop

Plugin I used for eCommerce system:Woo Commerce

I know it seems stupid to make an investment into a theme but in my opinion this is FAR less expensive then other closing methods I have used in the past. If the the owner/decision maker does not like the design I can re-brand the website really fast and move onto the next prospect!

Hello,

My name is Bonnie Colvin and I work for unTappedREP, a new web design/marketing company located in Grants Pass. We've been into the shop many times and absolutely love the selection of natural herbs and vitamins.

Our Team designed a example website for your business to show you what we can do for you.

This website includes the following features:
  • Easy addition of products, pages, and blog posts.
  • Detailed sales, customer and stock reports.
  • Easy Customer management.
  • Shopping Cart that works with Paypal, Google Checkout, and many other payment gateways.
  • Physical products? Check. Digital products? Check. This system empowers you to sell anything online.
  • We've built in comprehensive shipping settings enabling you to define shipping costs per product, or declare a flat rate for all your products, you can also offer free shipping.

You will also notice that we have designed the mock-up to be responsive. This means it is set up to work on any device and screen size. This is very important as half the traffic that is visiting your site through main keywords are on devices such as smart phones and iPads.

There are 49,000 monthly Google searches for the keyword "The Herb Shop". Your website ranks number one for this keyword. However, your current website is not mobile-friendly. This could be causing you to lose sales as anyone viewing your site from a mobile device is confronted with a too-large and cluttered page.

We really believe that we can help increase your sales. If you like the mock-up we have made, we will happily customize it to your needs.

Mike Wilbourn (unTappedRep Founder) will be contacting you soon via phone to see if you are interested in the design. We want to make a break into the local market and build trust in our community by using your site as an example.

You can view your mock-up at the link provided below:

Thank you,

Bonnie Colvin

I will do this for 5 more business after I finish my current workload tonight and will report back tomorrow with sales or failure.

I am tired have not slept for 27 hours and will need to hit the sack for a few now. This post probably sounds like gibberish because I am a Zombie. After I wake up I have 3 more sites to finish for current clients (just small tweaks) and I will get on designing the other demo sites.

Honestly I would cold call to prospect for the people who would be most interested in seeing a demo site.

I am picking 5-10 industries that I would like to see in my portfolio and will find a good prospect for each one. IF they do not want the design it is really easy to re-brand and move to the next prospect. Even if they do not buy the site right away the business owner may contact you in the future knowing you can get the job done. By showing them the mock website you are letting them know you do design work and building trust. I think this is a great way to get started. Some might even want to hire you to work on a different design if they like your style but not the first concept.

Allow me to suggest an opinion in that part.

Instead of saying "This website includes the following features", why don't you say

"You can easily setup your online store to have more customer, and you'll also have these additional benefits:"

What I'm trying to say is, instead of showing your complete list of features, listing the benefits FIRST will be more exciting for them. For example:

You can easily setup your online store to have more customer, and you'll also have additional benefits:
    • You can easily see your daily online sales report, it will not add your workload of creating separate report
    • You can let potential customer pay in many ways, and you'll get the payment instantly
    • Charge for shipping is very easy, just need a few minutes of setup and customer will have their shipping cost calculated, WITHOUT having to ask you.
    How's that sound?

Oh, and maybe you want to try another, simple yet crazy idea? Just PM if you're interested

Thank you for your insightful post. I am sure Mike will be messaging you soon. Specifically, this prospect has basic understanding of how WP works and other content management systems. He used an online design program and pays a monthly fee to have his site up and has good computer knowledge. Last time we were in the store talking as concerned customers about the state of their website, he became embarrassed and obviously disliked the site very much. The conversation even led to talking about how he's hired someone but they have flaked off completely for the past eight months. I think he's really ready to just get it over with. He will probably buy the site over the phone. If the site does not sale, Mike will just tailor the website to fit another business until it is sold. We really want this kind of site in our portfolio because what is in your portfolio is usually the kind of jobs you will receive, unless you are marketing for other niches.

    Hello,

Do you think you have the right to resell themeforest theme ?

No, we purchase individual licenses per site. If you want to resell a theme, almost every theme on there has developer rights which are usually priced at $500-$2000. We do have a decent library of these themes. Themeforest does not own these themes, they are simply a market. The themes are developed and distributed through Themeforest by individual developers. Each developer has certain terms of use, and surprisingly you can find resell rights for pretty inexpensive on there. Most themes allow one site per standard license purchase. You are not reselling the theme, you are using it in your design which is why they are for sale in the first place. If a client wants to move forward with the design, we usually invoice them for a fresh license of the theme their site requires. After purchase, we often do some heavy editing on the Photoshop layout and make custom child pages so the site fits the client's needs.

So a couple months ago you two were in here, telling everyone how well you were doing with a low priced website sales program.

A lot of advice bounced off you...

    What happened?

We got 12 websites done and the last 3 are almost done. My offsite designer is working on them now. Out of these 12 $99 deals, 8 of them become much larger jobs bringing in some real decent income. Now that we have a portfolio our website will be redesigned to focus on our local market.

One larger site that we will finish tonight is: https://benefitorganics.com/ Was a $99 deal that grew.

Another from that deal almost done: Swift Resume

A simple blog for the $99 price range: Gas Mileage Mentor.com

Most of these sites were just designed as a mock and moved over to the clients server. Almost all of them wanted me to keep the design simple enough to update without code knowledge.

      Does that answer your question?
