A WARNING, to those who use sms marketing

Just a heads up for everyone.

Despite it being legal in the uk to text companies who advertise in the yellow pages (as long as you offer an opt out e.g. "to end text STOP"). I still came unstuck

Here's why.......I am on a UK network that offers unlimted text message plans (or so I thought).

This afternoon I could not call or text anyone. My network barred my number for "sms abuse." As I was sending texts of a non personal nature. At the end of the day it was my fault for not reading all 128 pages of the networks T&C's lol.

Has this happened to anyone else and is it a problem with all UK networks or just certain ones?

I must be very lucky as my network has just unbarred my phone :-) but let that be a lesson to anyone thinking of text messaging on a big scale with their phone!

for obvious reason I am not pleased as a relative newbie I need to keep marketing costs down (yes I know marketing is a ROI thingy and not a cost).

cutting one avenue of cheap marketing makes it ultimately harder for me to make money to invest in other forms of maketing that are easier and more effective eg services like yours because believe it or not even though it was cheaper using my free texts it was time consuming typing in 20 numbers at a time as a group message and then waiting for them to send before sending another batch.

I got some good initial feedback if the said uk network had not had briefly banned me I would have carried on; got a couple of sales and invested the money I got in sending out my text messages at 1000 times a go....dead easy but like I said I didn't have the money to start with so people like me and people like you actually lose out and don't gain.

It will now take me longer to be able to afford the services of sms marketing firms

No, there are other things you can do to market yourslef.
Don't blame the phone company because you abused the system.

    How about cold calling?
    Walk-ins?
    GumTree/Craigslist?
Email.... I hate to say this one... don't abuse it
    Networking?

    How much do these cost?

You put all your eggs in one basket doing something that was against the terms.
Here, we can't send unsolicited SMS, its against the law.

Instead of saying, oh as a result I am now screwed....
Why not look at all the other options and show everyone how this didn't set you back?

thanks to those of you who have offered me advice.

I am looking at other marketing avenues mainly cold calling, email marketing, referrals, networking and word of mouth, walkins, gumtree and a bit of direct mail.

my point was I was pissed off that I had come unstuck by the small print (who reads that?) of a big uk mobile network and I wanted to warn others so they didn't waste their time like me.

Just didn't expect a response on here from someone who was pleased a company could be closing off one form of freeish marketing to those starting off but I guess it takes all sorts.

Its a shame some members want to go down a different route from the "lets all share our experience and help each other." At least I know they are the ones not making it and to take their advice with a lorry load of salt! hehe :-)
